This fourth wall-breaking, three-book collection showcases Jackson's adventures through fantasy realms, comic book universes, and classic space opera settings. Each fast-paced novel allows Jackson to flex his powers, skills, and wits as he exploits the rules, points out the respective genre's flaws, and undermines godly authority to win the day. All the while laughing at the expense of our beloved tropes. Because that is what villains should do, shouldn’t they?

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Amid the dizzying rides, tantalizing games of chance, and fanciful attractions of a state fair, two teenage sweethearts on the cusp of life and love's pleasures find their way to a shadowy carnival tent brimming with curiosities. There, from the bizarre and enthralling Gypsy Mummy, a mechanized merchant of dreams and prognosticator of tomorrows, the young couple learns what fate promises for them. But fate, for Odd Thomas and Stormy Llewellyn, is something altogether different: full of dark corners, sharp edges, and things no seer or soothsayer could ever anticipate.

Publisher's summary
"My name is Mike Ross. I'm a Ferryman. I help people with ghost problems, or ghosts with people problems. Funny thing, no one ever helps me with my problems. Civil War ghosts bent on killing me, Skinwalkers who just want my body, and a vindictive spirit linked both to my bloodline and my destiny.... It turns out the dead still hold a good deal of influence over the world, and they don't want to give it up. I'm in way over my head. Fortunately, I'm too stubborn to quit."

Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. He can see ghosts, and he's handling it...
Just a good vanilla story. The protagonist is a vet home from the Middle East after suffering a severe injury. Not crippling, but enough that he can't soldier any longer.
Mid 20's, he's going back to college, finds he can see and interact with ghosts. He doesn't lose his mind, he doesn't find it's a curse, he isn't beset by horror - no pretentiousness - it's just a new perception and it gets him into a new way of life. Like anything in life, there are benefits and costs that balance.
The story is about the odd jobs his new ability earns him and the misadventures that follow. He handles it with an everyman attitude and dry sense of humor.
Overall, a fun read that I recommend to someone who enjoys a light tale with a supernatural twist.

Really interesting first entry though a bit rushed
Some folks have compared this book and its world to Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files series. I can see the comparison given the theme and the humor, but I think this tale can stand on its own
It is similar though, in that our protagonist has a connection to the supernatural world and becomes quite notorious within it, causing him to face a great number of dangers (in this book alone). Also like within The Dresden Files universe, our hero slowly finds out he's a bit more special than he thought.
The ghostly world gets quite fleshed out in this book as well, while still leaving some mysteries open for future tales. We watch our hero perform experiments and gather info that leads to various understandings of the rules of the semi-afterlife. We also see our hero learn some lessons the hard way via some unexpected avenues.
I said this story was a bit rushed, and it was. If you've ever read the Harry Potter novels, imagine them condensed (devoid of anything not absolutely relevant to the overall story) and in one book. That's sort of how this book felt.
That's not a bad thing mind you, it's just a different style. It reminds me a lot of "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. Each chapter/episode is a new adventure in the life of our protagonist, so while it does jump forward a bit, it keeps the story moving.
The downside of the above would be the narrator. Even when in the same chapter (or even page), it's usually clear when the writer wants to break and shift to a new scene; however this narrator plows right through, leaving you feel a bit like you just missed a step. Makes you wonder if they had limited time in the studio to do the reading.
The narrator also does a fairly poor job at various voices and even tones while reading. Most of the prose is read in the same tone of voice and can easily blend together if you're listening while driving or some other activity.
Overall, I'd give the story a solid 4-4.5, it was enjoyable, even if rushed (including the resolution). If you consider the story a compilation of adventures, that should help with any jarring transitions.
I'd have to give the narrator a 3 though.

If you like Jim Butcher, try this Jim!
If you could sum up Dead Eye: Pennies for the Ferryman in three words, what would they be?
Supernatural DryHumor Modern
What other book might you compare Dead Eye: Pennies for the Ferryman to and why?
It has the dry humor and less nonsense of Dresden, or Briggs.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The book is broken into episodes - rather than chapters - so waiting and listening to the next part seems to make it a bit better. The important bits are highlighted again in the next episode, so it is closer to an anthology of novellas.

Fun read
Plausibility of the story is a stretch at times. Not sure with so many ghost around and their shenanigans the living would not notice.

Great Story Idea but executed choppy
Would you try another book from Jim Bernheimer and/or Jeffrey Kafer?
I liked the historical characters and the story premise. The story was jumpy and could have been so much more. It was hard to see any connections to what was happening in the main character's life. Fell a little flat. But worth the listen!
Which scene was your favorite?
Atlantic City visit - explained the ghostly world
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
maybe - idea was great - poorly put together so screenplay could be very different.

Reads like a debut novel
What did you like best about Dead Eye: Pennies for the Ferryman? What did you like least?
The sarcastic wit of the protagonist is delightful, but his personality is just one dimensional. He expresses little feeling except a "whatever" attitude. You don't feel his fear, passion, longing or anything else.
If you’ve listened to books by Jim Bernheimer before, how does this one compare?
This was my first - I thought it was his first too.
What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?
He's consistent, alternates between voices quite well and "acts" the copy so it sounds in character.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably not - I think the ghosts and skinwalkers are better left to the imagination.
Any additional comments?
I didn't like how the book started and just kept rambling into Episodes. The storyline built over time, but at first it was disjointed, like separate vignettes, and didn't flow right.
