Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - Dead Ever After. The end of an era. Lucky number 13. As great as my anticipation is, and as high as my expectations are, I can’t help but be sad that there will be no more Sookie adventures to read. It’s hard to put so many otherworldly creatures into ours, try to make it a little sexy, a little mysterious, and succeed the way Harris has without resorting to cheap titillations. In the final book (though I heard a rumor about character epilogues), Sookie is arrested for murder and must solve what could be her most difficult mystery yet. Johanna Parker returns as narrator and expertly falls into the role, keeping our heroine’s characteristic smoky, smoldering voice on perfect no-nonsense levels. Come on back down to Bon Temps – this is not a murder to be missed. Erin, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"The Sookie Stackhouse series seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor." ( Boulder Weekly)
"Harris’s creation offers a magical and mysterious twist on traditional vampire stories." ( Houston Chronicle)
"What sucked me in? Definitely the books’ oddly charming, often funny mix of the mundane and the absurd. And the chills and thrills in boudoirs and various locales around the South aren’t too bad either." ( The Seattle Times)

What a sad flat ending

Totally underwhelmed, what a shame Sookie's story ended with such a disappointing book. It seems Ms Harris just took all the characters and unfinished story lines and just stuck a conclusion on each.

After finishing a great book I love the feeling of completion and regret that the book is done. So lacking at the end of this one.

Full Circle. The End.

Betrayal of Sookie but not from where you might think. Endings and Beginnings. Many loose ends tied together. The end. Finis.

Disappointed

Hated how this series was ended. Felt like the author no longer cared. Disappointed.

It's finally over.

What did you love best about Dead Ever After?

I enjoyed the appearences of as many characters from the series as Charlaine Harris could fit into it. I liked who Sookie ended up with in the end. I love the narration by Johanna Parker, as always.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlaine Harris again?

Yes, I'm planning on listening to After Dead: What Happened Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse when it comes out.

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her easy lilting accent for the character of Sookie really brought a lot to the series. She does many voices to gives characters distinction. I love her Pam.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not that I recall right now.

Any additional comments?

A very strange and disjointed ending to Sookie's journey. This is not a satisfactory ending because characters disappear into their endings without sufficient explanation. Sookie is still incredibly hypocritical and judgmental as she has been for the past 2 books. Many characters return for small appearences in the conclusion of the Southern Vampire Mysteries.

I am glad I llistened...

So many negative reviews made me delay in finishing the series, but I eventually listened. Thought it was much better than people made it sound, so I wanted to leave a review. I personally appreciated more time with the characters. I thought the fairy element at the end was unnecessary and some of the plot motivations were unrealistic in that they didn’t really seem to warrant the behavior they caused. But that happens sometimes with stories. I wasn’t really here (in this book, esp) for a thrilling story. I honestly just enjoyed Sookie’s personality and interactions with the other characters that were friendly to her. I thought the story definitely could have continued... The series was an entertaining escape!!

Satisfied

That ending was good. No fairytale ending, but rather a more realistic happy ending that tied up loose ends, while providing opportunity for a potential future spinoff. Loved this book series. Sean D James

Charlaine put the final nail in the coffin.

I really felt like the author just wanted this series to be over. I guess she exited the best way she could. I don't mind the character she ends up being in love with, but this book could have been way more exciting than what it was.

That being said, I have loved the series, loved the narrator of the whole series. If your like me, your going to have to read it just because it's the last one. But don't expect fire works because those move to Oklahoma.

Au revoir to Sookie Stackhouse and the gang. I really wish she became a vampire and started an whole new series. But... that does not happen. :/

Fantastic ending to a great series

I have read all of the books in the series in print, but really enjoyed the flawless narration of this grand finale. Even though I'm sad to see the sookieverse come to a close it was enjoyable. I'm looking forward to Charlaine's new offerings!

I'm going to miss these characters

Better than I was expecting based on all the awful reviews, but certainly not up to the standards of the first books in this series. Sookie makes a somewhat final decision which will surprise no one who is familiar with the series. Eric also seems to go back to his original ruthless self. Pam finally gets recognition. I will miss the characters in these series, they are some of my favorite, but I think it's time for the series to end. It truly seems to have run it's course. Johanna Parker does a wonderful job of narrating - as usual!

It can't end

Any additional comments?

While I listened, I decided I would start at the beginning and relisten to all the books in order again. I don't want these characters to stop. Even if Charlaine Harris is tired of writing these books can't she have other writers (super talented) take over, as other authors have done. Make it a franchise. I enjoy the books so much more than the "True Blood" TV show.
