Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - Dead Ever After. The end of an era. Lucky number 13. As great as my anticipation is, and as high as my expectations are, I can’t help but be sad that there will be no more Sookie adventures to read. It’s hard to put so many otherworldly creatures into ours, try to make it a little sexy, a little mysterious, and succeed the way Harris has without resorting to cheap titillations. In the final book (though I heard a rumor about character epilogues), Sookie is arrested for murder and must solve what could be her most difficult mystery yet. Johanna Parker returns as narrator and expertly falls into the role, keeping our heroine’s characteristic smoky, smoldering voice on perfect no-nonsense levels. Come on back down to Bon Temps – this is not a murder to be missed. Erin, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"The Sookie Stackhouse series seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor." ( Boulder Weekly)
"Harris’s creation offers a magical and mysterious twist on traditional vampire stories." ( Houston Chronicle)
"What sucked me in? Definitely the books’ oddly charming, often funny mix of the mundane and the absurd. And the chills and thrills in boudoirs and various locales around the South aren’t too bad either." ( The Seattle Times)

Is this the end?!?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Only if they were a die hard Sookie fan!

If you’ve listened to books by Charlaine Harris before, how does this one compare?

The narrator is brilliant but this story fell short for me!

Which scene was your favorite?

When all Sookies friends and family came to support her!

Did Dead Ever After inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

This story didn't round off the series nicely as I hoped it would. It was nice to see loads of the old character in it but the ending seemed rushed :(

Fine end to a fine series

What made the experience of listening to Dead Ever After the most enjoyable?

The wrapping up of loose ends and the beautiful narration.

Any additional comments?

I've enjoyed the Audible series from the beginning, and though I'm sad to see it go, I'm satisfied with the way Ms. Harris ended the series, and I look forward to her next adventures.

I was also ready to end the series

Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?

I think that I might take a brake from reading Charlaine Harris. I followed this series closely. I pre-ordered the last five or six books and I think that now I know her writing style. I think that I might know it a little too well which made her stories a little too predictable.

Has Dead Ever After turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will probably continue to read supernatural romances. But I will be a bit more selective. Just the same way that the Bridget Jones novel lead to the publication of a lot of sub-par "chick-lit" there are a lot of bad versions of True Blood. I will get back to the more plot based (rather than serial character based) titles out there. I will, however, avoid series for a while.

Any additional comments?

I think that the ending of this novel shows that Charlaine Harries was ready to end the series a few editions ago. I feel that she knew what many of the outspoken fans wanted and just plopped it in there. It's sad that she did have to introduce SO MANY characters and SO MANY supernatural species. Things got out of hand mid-way through the series so the all-too-neat final book was likely the easiest way to end something that could have finished about 6 or 7 books earlier.

A good ending.

Even though this felt a little more rough around the edges than usual (especially in the beginning), I still liked this book and loved the series overall. The ending was what I expected it would be, and I thought it was absolutely the right choice for Sookie to make. Although I'll miss my annual foray into the life of Sookie Stackhouse, I'm glad that Harris chose to end the series rather than drag out a story she really isn't inspired to write anymore.

A good ending for the series

Some readers appeared to have not liked the last three or four book. i I dont agree. I found the entire series great fun. I do admit that I bought the first one as a sale book but I was hooked then. I thoroughly enjoy Ms Harris's books and Ms Parker brings Sookie to life! Thank you both for many hours of mystery and romance.

"That's it?????"

After following Sookie for outrageous ups & downs emotional & physical roller coasters for years I was certainly ready for the end to come. And while it worked out the way I assumed it would, it left me wanting more of a epilog type closer. Where we know exactly where everyone ended up. Just a short paragraph that would bring us up to speed with Sookie & the gangs life a year or two later. Aside from that it was an ok read.

Sharp and clever writing in this book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is the 13th book of a series. Either someone will have read the series or won't. Would I recommend the series? Yes, for those who enjoy light reading and a guilty pleasure.I haven't paid much attention to how the first 12 books made me feel while reading and/or listening to them, but this last book really did entertain me. The sentence structure was efficient, descriptive, and clever. She may have been this way all along, but it just seems to me that her writing and dialog were very sharp, avoiding most superlatives. Additionally, I love the way she can set a scene of normalcy (for lack of a better word) in the midst of something fantastic. A bunch of supernatural people getting together to eat chicken fried steak while protecting Sookie from more supernatural events? While some might think that was a boring scene, I found it enchanting and enjoyed the contrast of events. The plot may seem weak to some, but I can't comment on that. It is the end of the series. It is fiction. We can't change what was written, as it is not our story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't see Sam and Sookie together. Why can't your best guy friend remain just a best friend?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

They already made a complete bastard of the tv series, so I wouldn't recommend a movie made from this book series.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was great!

What a sad flat ending

Totally underwhelmed, what a shame Sookie's story ended with such a disappointing book. It seems Ms Harris just took all the characters and unfinished story lines and just stuck a conclusion on each.

After finishing a great book I love the feeling of completion and regret that the book is done. So lacking at the end of this one.

Full Circle. The End.

Betrayal of Sookie but not from where you might think. Endings and Beginnings. Many loose ends tied together. The end. Finis.

Disappointed

Hated how this series was ended. Felt like the author no longer cared. Disappointed.
