Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - Dead Ever After. The end of an era. Lucky number 13. As great as my anticipation is, and as high as my expectations are, I can’t help but be sad that there will be no more Sookie adventures to read. It’s hard to put so many otherworldly creatures into ours, try to make it a little sexy, a little mysterious, and succeed the way Harris has without resorting to cheap titillations. In the final book (though I heard a rumor about character epilogues), Sookie is arrested for murder and must solve what could be her most difficult mystery yet. Johanna Parker returns as narrator and expertly falls into the role, keeping our heroine’s characteristic smoky, smoldering voice on perfect no-nonsense levels. Come on back down to Bon Temps – this is not a murder to be missed. Erin, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"The Sookie Stackhouse series seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor." ( Boulder Weekly)
"Harris’s creation offers a magical and mysterious twist on traditional vampire stories." ( Houston Chronicle)
"What sucked me in? Definitely the books’ oddly charming, often funny mix of the mundane and the absurd. And the chills and thrills in boudoirs and various locales around the South aren’t too bad either." ( The Seattle Times)

Could have been just another Sookie novel.

Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?

Yes of course!

What could Charlaine Harris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

For a book to close out a popular character it was really weak. I expected a lot more drama/adventure/excitement but it seems she just sent everyone off nice and neat (I predicted a pairing up, yippee) but I didn't feel like I went on a journey after it ended, it was anti-climatic.

Which character – as performed by Johanna Parker – was your favorite?

Sookie of course.

Was Dead Ever After worth the listening time?

Sure, I still needed the ending if that's what you want to call it.

Any additional comments?

I read an interview in which Charlaine said around the end of year she release a final book detailing what happened to each character, I guess sort of like the ending of Six Feet Under where it gave you a snippet of how they lived out their lives and "died" so maybe it will be a little more detailed because a lot of the primary characters just didn't have a lot of face time, they were more like extras. All in all I still loved the series and would recommend it to others and I may eventually listen to them all again.

This is the end

What did you love best about Dead Ever After?

The full circle of the characters from the series.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sookie of course was my favorite character and I am glad for one who she ended up with.

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am so glad she read all the books. I could not picture anyone else doing the voices of my favorite characters. Including Bubba! She just has that southern thing down to an art.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end. It was just a nice ending. I am being vague so I don't spoil it for anyone.

Any additional comments?

I am very disappointed with how True Blood is going on HBO. However, I was very pleased that this series stayed true to the characters and the author stayed true to herself. True Blood is someone else's story now. It is not Ms. Harris. She has taken a great deal of crap for that. She wrote a wonderful story with characters that you could really get into. Congrats to her on the completion of her story of Sookie and I wish her all the best on her next series.

Sookie Stackhouse Series

This is my absolute favorite series! I'm so perplexed that I finished the last book in the series, but it's definitely a book series I will come back to again and again!

A Worthy Ending

Any additional comments?

This last book closed up nicely the storyline, and I think the quality of writing was better than earlier books in the series. I really enjoyed listening to them all, over the last 18 months, and will miss having the 'treat' of going back to Sookie's world. Johanna Parker's narration made that world a reality. She did a fabulous job.

Great storyline brought to a great end. I have enjoyed the entire series and will likely re-listen to the series again. Thanks Charlaine Harris for "Sookie Stackhouse"

Better than reviews imply

I almost didn't buy this book based on bad reviews but it is way better than they would imply. I wish she would have made it work with Eric but I understand why she didn't. the final chase scene could have been more intense with more at stake but it was fine. just over to quick. this was a much better book than I thought it would be. definitely recommend reading.

garbage ending, very disappointed

I understand that this is a supernatural mystery series. however the romance has been the main focal point of the story for me. I can see how and why it ended the way that it did. for one thing it answers all of our questions about weather Sookie and Sam had more than a friendship. about whether or not Eric would stick around when she was old. about whether or not she would be able to have children. about what Eric would choose to do or if he would get out of the contract. unfortunately I can't help but feel like the ending was sorely disappointing. I get how it could have ended that way I see that we were set up to accept it a long time ago I suppose. but it is so hard to swallow after reading book after book and falling in love with Eric ourselves. I don't read Supernatural romance novels for realistic and disappointing relationships. I read them to go to a magical place where a regular girl from Bon-Ton Louisiana can end up with a Vampire King and live happily ever after. Where she can experience true and crazy passionate love, the kind that only exists in fairy tales. I mean at the end of this story Eric just leaves and reminds her that he will always have affection for her. it really makes me feel like reading the last few books was a waste of my time, unless she was lying about actually loving her the whole time.

I'll be missing Sookie

This final installment of the Sookie Stackhouse series did not disappoint! Although I am so sad that the series is ending, it was great to see the significant characters in Sookie's life, from the other 12 books in the series, come back to her when she really needed them.

The only one missing was Bubba! But I will have to be content with his farewell in book 12.

I definitely recommend the entire series. I love to listen to them over and over again!

I won't give away any spoilers here; I am so glad Sookie might finally have a chance to be happy but I wish there had been some kind of Epilogue!

THE END

If you could sum up Dead Ever After in three words, what would they be?

I believe first, that it is no accident that this is book "13". In the Sookie universe there seem to be very few things that are inconsequential.
Without giving too much up. Know that this book does a nice job of tying up loose ends (and there are a lot of them) and letting us know who is OK, and who is Dead Ever After!

I adore these books and was very sad to see them go, but was very much happy with the way things ended up for Sookie and friends. I do hear that Charlaine Harris releasing a "where are they now" kind of book in the fall. As content as I am with the wrapping up of the series, I am still looking forward to that.

Love the story, & the Narrator.
Thanks for good times.
