Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - Dead Ever After. The end of an era. Lucky number 13. As great as my anticipation is, and as high as my expectations are, I can’t help but be sad that there will be no more Sookie adventures to read. It’s hard to put so many otherworldly creatures into ours, try to make it a little sexy, a little mysterious, and succeed the way Harris has without resorting to cheap titillations. In the final book (though I heard a rumor about character epilogues), Sookie is arrested for murder and must solve what could be her most difficult mystery yet. Johanna Parker returns as narrator and expertly falls into the role, keeping our heroine’s characteristic smoky, smoldering voice on perfect no-nonsense levels. Come on back down to Bon Temps – this is not a murder to be missed. Erin, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"The Sookie Stackhouse series seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor." ( Boulder Weekly)
"Harris’s creation offers a magical and mysterious twist on traditional vampire stories." ( Houston Chronicle)
"What sucked me in? Definitely the books’ oddly charming, often funny mix of the mundane and the absurd. And the chills and thrills in boudoirs and various locales around the South aren’t too bad either." ( The Seattle Times)

Last book about Sookie! Wahhhh . . .

If you could sum up Dead Ever After in three words, what would they be?

Really great book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead Ever After?

The ending

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wanted to cry when I learned it will be the last book in the series!

No Way! This ending to the series must be a dream!

What did you like best about Dead Ever After? What did you like least?

It was ok at best. I could have gotten with the story to end the series if it didn't feel forced. I was unfull filled. Maybe its because she didn't end up with any other choice but who she ended up with, but if they had giving it more time to seem feasable, I could have went with it.

Has Dead Ever After turned you off from other books in this genre?

No it has not turned me off. I love books like this.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked that Claude lost his beauty. It was deserving.

Do you think Dead Ever After needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I think it definitely does! I just hope this was a "dream" book on what the author would like to see happen but she knows better to end it this way because it wasn't feasible or filling so we will get one more book so she can end it better. We need a big bang to feel complete.

Any additional comments?

Please one more book. It can end so blandly like this. Don't make me have to hunt down fan fiction to feel complete lol lol

Really

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I love Sookie Stackhouse series, but this didn't seem like Charlaine Harris writing style, the book didn't give any closure to alot of the characters, & just not her best at all

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlaine Harris again?

I dont know , her other books I can take them or leave them

How could the performance have been better?

better stroy

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Dead Ever After?

all the devil scenes , she should have kept first person narration

Why Is Everyone Complaining? Relax People.

Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?

Sure! I need books to listen to while I do housework. Johanna Parker did an ok job, but her voices for men were kind of awkward.

If you’ve listened to books by Charlaine Harris before, how does this one compare?

This book was just as mediocre as the rest of the series.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It was a fine performance. As I said before, the rendering of the male voices were awkward to listen to. However, that was partially due to some pretty boring writing.

Do you think Dead Ever After needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. It's not going anywhere. Give up the ghost. I had really hoped that the series was going to ramp up and end up somewhere exciting. But really, why did I think that? We're talking about numerous books where not much happened: Sookie brushes her hair, eats, drinks, gets dressed, cleans house, we get background info on people we don't care about, we get information on situations that don't move the story anywhere, etc. Charlaine Harris never tricked anyone. She just made up an interesting situation and an interesting set of characters. Then she plopped them around and had them do some pretty boring crap.We don't need more of this town or these characters. They are all just...done.

Any additional comments?

I really think that the people complaining about the ending aren't being fair and are having a bit of revisionist history when it comes to remembering the other books. (Which I totally get, because I did it myself.) It's always been a C/C- series. Great for listening when you need to do laundry or pay attention to other things. But this has never been a stellar series, so why is everyone so angry about the end? It had a sub par ending because it was a sub par series. Quit beating up CH for not ending it how you wanted it. She let you know long ago what to expect, but you went and got excited by True Blood. She never tricked anyone. People need to relax and enjoy it for what it was: something to read while you do other stuff.

Just kind of fell flat

I am a Charlaine Harris fan and love the Sookie series, but this being the last book it was like Ms. Harris wanted to hurry and wrap things up just to get to the end. Not got the storyline the other Sookie books have had. Im not saying it's a bad book, just not the best in the series and written like an afterthought to tie up a few loose ends.

No

Has Dead Ever After turned you off from other books in this genre?

13 books as an invested reader, I feel cheated by the poor wrap up of the series.

Very disappointed

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you have read any of the previous books you would not like this one at all. The Story was unfocused and lacked that “SOMETHING” that all of the previous books had.

What was most disappointing about Charlaine Harris’s story?

The story line itself was the biggest disappointment. Mrs. Harris reintroduced characters that were written out nicely in previous books and dulled down the charisma of all the main characters.

What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?

As always Johanna Parker did a great job with the material she was given.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don’t think that Mrs. Harris was ready to write this book. Although it seems like we waited for a long time I would have waiting longer to have something good.

Any additional comments?

I am not really surprised by the contradiction in this book. If you look back Mrs. Harris does this often. Take a look at Debbie Pelt in one book she was a ware-Lynx in the next she was a ware-Fox I think that she should get a better auditor.

Disappointing...

What would have made Dead Ever After better?

It feels like Charlaine Harris just phoned it in. A whole lot of nothing happens for hours, and then it get rushed and everything is shoved into a little box with a cheap bow.

What could Charlaine Harris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Actually focus on the vampires. We've spent 12 books with them, and this is the end?

Have you listened to any of Johanna Parker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I LOVE Johanna Parker's voice. She does a great job of portraying Sookie.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Dead Ever After?

Most of the middle.

Disappointed!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have enjoyed the other books in this series, but this final one was just a disappointing end to a great series. Harris lacked the imagination to make final book amazing and would have been better off not writing this book at all.

Has Dead Ever After turned you off from other books in this genre?

I still love the genre of sci fi romance, but will not read another Harris book.

what a let down

Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?

I have listened to all the Sookie books and loved them and I was looking forward to this last one, but I was very disappointed in it. Not the way I would have ended it at all. I did not like this one. Sorry Ms. Harris...
