Critic reviews

"There is zombie fiction and then there is crawl-out-of-the-grave-and-drag-you-to-hell zombie fiction. Day by Day Armageddon is hands down the best zombie book I have ever read. Dawn of the Dead meets 28 Days Later doesn't even come close to describing how fantastic this thriller is. It is so real, so terrifying, and so well written that I slept with not one, but two loaded Glocks under my pillow for weeks afterwards. J. L. Bourne is the new king of hardcore zombie action!" Freakin' AWESOME!

I've listened to a ton of audiobooks while I commute, and am a big fan of the zombie apocalypse genre. I've never written a review before, but this book was so great that I just had to write one. This book is a masterpiece. Also, the second book is probably better than the first in my opinion. I started listening to this story and was so consumed by the story that I didn't want to leave the car. I got my wife to start reading it, and even though she is skeptical about this genre, she was absolutely consumed by it as well. BUY IT!

High standard for all zombie novels

Where does Day By Day Armageddon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This series (well the first two books) places among my top 5 must read Zombie books. Non stop action, logical, realistic, and very frightening. Must read for doomsdayers, die hard zombie fans, and survivalist.

What other book might you compare Day By Day Armageddon to and why?

J.A. Recht series (Thunder and Ashes, Plague of the Dead, and the upcoming The Survivors),

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

Great performance

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes...fear and a sense of wanting to build a bunker in my back yard!

Best Written Zombie Fiction Ever

DbDA is an outstanding read for anyone who enjoys zombie or end of the world scenarios. I perfer this over WWZ just bc of the feeling of despair you get and the amount of detail the main character puts into his journal. Its written as a journal and the narrator does a great job of reading it. Wow just Wow plus the squeal hits later this year.

Great book! More more more!!

After reading WWZ, plague of the dead, the strain, the cell, I was looking forward to this book. Really loved it but wish it was a little longer.

Narrator Jay Snyder is a perfect fit!

DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON is an end of the word zombie apocalypse story told in journal format reminding me of I AM LEGEND but only in a less...I don’t know, lonely maybe?...sort of way. I guess the difference is while Matheson’s first hand zombie account had a very isolated hopelessness about it, Bourne’s journal entries were full of humanity and hope. The protagonist, a military pilot, isn’t left hold up on his own to slowly lose his mind with only the dead to interact with. He does move and band with other survivors and even in the despair of the situation and in the face of immense loss he seems to keep his head up for the most part. So what could have easily played out as a very depressing read, considering the topic, DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON didn’t leave me feeling dejected. I found J.L. Bourne’s writing to be an easy read and I liked the “fight” and resourcefulness of our pilot. I was definitely drawn in enough to be interested in continuing on with the next installment.

Strange Writing Style

What disappointed you about Day By Day Armageddon?

This is not a very well written book. The narrator's speech waffles jarringly from hyper-descriptive and meticulous to brash and vulgar. This doesn't seem to be from the stress of the situation on the character, but just poor writing. I am led to believe this by the author's use of big words that add no extra meaning to the story and would not be something I would expect the narrator to say. For example, "I commenced to take..." instead of simply "I took...". There are many other examples.

There are many instances near the end of the story where the narrator fails to see obvious dangers or make simple connections between events which seems completely out of character. These instances feel like lazy plot devices to create suspense or drama; they fall flat.

The reader did a fine job. I would not be deterred from listening to another book read by him based off of this performance. I would not; however, read another book by this author.

Would you ever listen to anything by J L Bourne again?

No.

What three words best describe Jay Snyder’s performance?

Emotive
Precise
Brisk

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment

March 14th, 1313 hundred I finished listening to

Day by Day. March 14th, 18:42 I started writing a review for this Armageddon book.

Myself and 169 other people are following this chick who listens to nothing but Zombie books. She is fairly critical and rarely gives five stars to a book. She gave this Five Stars, so I got it. I thought it was good and I gave it five stars, although barely.

It is entertaining and worth your credit, but there is nothing new here. If you have read several Zombie books, you may find this a little tame. For those military types who like there books to be methodical, this could be right up your alley. It is only 6 and a half hours long, mostly because there is not a lot of wasted dialogue. There is no love story. At times it reminds me of Joe Friday on Dragnet, but I liked that show, I am not criticizing. It was a little slow at the start, but around the middle it starts heating up. It ends as if I was to stop writing right now. There is no doubt about there being a sequel.

If you have never listen to a Zombie book, this would be a good start. Then you could work up two better Zombie books, Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry or Cell by Stephen King. I have not listen to that many Zombie books, but I do have the fever and will be listening to more.

March 14th, 18:53, I finished the review.

Great book, interesting format

I love zombie books, and Day By Day Armageddon is the best one Ive read so far. Feels much more "real" than most other zombie books. It is written in a different format- all individual journal entrys. At first I thought it was a tad disjointed, but I really came to like it. The book does really leave off in the middle of the story (certainty waiting for a sequel) - but didn't leave me feeling dissatisfied as many books awaiting a sequel do.

A new twist to a great tale.

JL Bourne presents us with a realistic zombie tale (if there can be such thing as a realistic zombie tale) told from a unique perspective; excerpts from a survivors diary. This is such a fresh twist to the standard narrative coupled with a excellent edge-of-your-seat zombie story.

Intense

Excellent book, intense, kept me on the edge, was hooked from the first minute. All I have to say - What a rush! is the first time I listen to a zombie book, and I must say it did not let me down, as a matter of fact I was not able to put it down. Excellent book, and narration.
