B grade TV series trying to be a book

I am disappointed.

Ed Greenwood and Jeff Grubb wrote the Forgotten Realms Campaign Set for TSR and he has written many novels since . .. some good, some . . . well lets just say we all have bad days . . .

This is I am afraid a mishmash of indifferent to please kill his main character NOW so we no longer have to suffer. . .

It is written like some early Batman TV series you can at times almost hear the words "tune in next next week will the Dark Lord get some brains/spine/life/meaning/find someone who cares even if does any or all of the above . . ."

It lurches from one gratuitous killing field to another with the odd schoolboy allusions to sexual innuendo or worse. . .

The anti hero is so lame you always wish he will die . . . Thomas Covenant and Co can breath a sigh of relief . . .

So far I have made 4 attempts to finish book one . . . I keep hoping it will get better . . .

The narrator tries to breath life into it but is hampered by inane & trite material . . . I pity him . . . he does a good job but he is let down by what he is forced to read . . .

The second book has a new narrator but it's not the narrator that's the issue here its the writing . . .

I love fantasy. I love games like WOW. I love scifi. I have done so all my life . . Now as my eyesight betrays me I listen to audio books . . .

I had hoped that a man who helped fuel fantasy games & novels would have done a better job . . . I was mistaken . . .

I have unfortunately purchased book one and two .. If I ever make it through one I will review Book Two . . . One can only hope it gets better . . .

I am sorry if I offend any one with this review but this is my opinion of this novel . . . feel free to write your own if you disagree . . .

I might go listen to Tolkien or Eddings etc . . . I need to rebuild my faith in fantasy writers . .

part one

Not a bad effort. But the problem is that this is not a complete book. The story does not have a climax nor resolution. It's sad that a book can be published which is obviously just a build up towards getting you to read the whole series. Well, as for me I was not interested enough in the story or characters to get the resolution I should have gotten in this book.

Part One (expanded reasoning)

I have to agree with the review from "Joel from Canada" - there doesn't seem to be a real completion to this particular book. Instead, once you finish, it feels as if you should be hearing the prompt "You have completed this part, but not the complete audiobook. Please visit your library for the next part of this audiobook."

Beyond that, however, I was pleased enough with the novel. I typically shy away from fantasy novels that broach upon any interaction between a "real world of today" and a fantasy realm, but Greenwood did a passable job of keeping this as a sub-item in the overall content.

The interactions between the "hero and the [battle]maiden fair" get a bit overdrawn and overacted - it feels like watching a bad high school play - but these moments pass and you are then submerged back into the real content of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed it and will be purchasing the second part in the series to find out where the tale goes from here. I'd recommend the book to others as long as they were aware that they'll need the next book (Arch Wizard) to be readily available when they finish this one.

Gave up on this one

Not much of a review because I gave up after 25 minutes
In what I heard, the story was trite, the characters wooden and the writing rather more suited to a teenagers book although the language was not.
It takes a lot to put me off a book that I have paid good money for but I just could not be bothered although I generally enjoy the genre

awesome book. read very well.

the story was great. I had trouble turning it off. Was just as good as reading the book. Would be nice to have a female voice the female parts but the narrator did splendidly
