Publisher's summary

The power-hungry High Lord of Kalare has launched a rebellion against the aging First Lord, Gaius Sextus, who with the loyal forces of Alera must fight beside the unlikeliest of allies - the equally contentious High Lord of Aquitaine. Meanwhile, young Tavi of Calderon joins a newly formed legion under an assumed name even as the ruthless Kalare unites with the Canim, bestial enemies of the realm whose vast numbers spell certain doom for Alera. When treachery from within destroys the army's command structure, Tavi finds himself leading an inexperienced, poorly equipped legion - the only force standing between the Canim horde and the war-torn realm.

Critic reviews

"Butcher deftly mixes military fantasy and political intrigue in the rollicking third Codex Alera book...Readers will cheer Tavi every step of the way.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The author of the Dresden Files modern fantasy series is equally familiar with old-style, ‘classic’ fantasy, demonstrating his skill in complex plotting and vivid world crafting to masterly effect.” (Library Journal)

“Plenty of military action and some interesting revelations about Tavi’s past make this one of the best volumes yet in this entertaining series.” (Locus)

Compelling to the point of distraction

I'll admit I questioned whether I'd finish The Codex Alera after the first two books, enjoying both not feeling terribly invested in the characters futures. While Cursors Fury presents an fantastic and epic adventure for each of it's POV characters, the growth and backstory herein gives the reader both reason to care and a hook that should carry them to the end of the series, if only to see where there arcs lead. A fitting midpoint to the series read by a narrator whose skill has increased with each entry, Cursors Fury is a must for fans of High Fantasy.

Just keeps getting better

This was supposed to be an interlude between another series but it has become totally captivating.

Surprisingly Great!

I read the reasoning for the writing of this book series and thought I would engage with the humor and give it a read. I’m only 3 books in but I have come to really enjoy listening to it.

On the level of the Red Rising series

So so good. The series has not faded at all as it has gone on. Might even get better and better.

good show of growth

Overall the story is fantastic. It covers a broad scope of change and challenge for the characters, and adds some growth to a number of them that you wouldn't normally see in most stories. The events within the story are massive, though not dramatically complex, and don't overshadow the characters themselves or their parts within the story. Definately worth a listen to. As usual the speaker does a good job maintaining specific voices for different characters, and adding good tonal differences to facilitate emotion.

love the series

I love this series but the random horns throughout the book is annoying and ruins the immersion

Awesome!!

Would you consider the audio edition of Cursor's Fury to be better than the print version?

Yes, every audio version of any book is better than the print. Who the hell would read a book when you have the best Narrator there is in Kate Reading to read it for you.

Which scene was your favorite?

Every battle scene.
