Publisher's summary

The power-hungry High Lord of Kalare has launched a rebellion against the aging First Lord, Gaius Sextus, who with the loyal forces of Alera must fight beside the unlikeliest of allies - the equally contentious High Lord of Aquitaine. Meanwhile, young Tavi of Calderon joins a newly formed legion under an assumed name even as the ruthless Kalare unites with the Canim, bestial enemies of the realm whose vast numbers spell certain doom for Alera. When treachery from within destroys the army's command structure, Tavi finds himself leading an inexperienced, poorly equipped legion - the only force standing between the Canim horde and the war-torn realm.

Critic reviews

"Butcher deftly mixes military fantasy and political intrigue in the rollicking third Codex Alera book...Readers will cheer Tavi every step of the way.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The author of the Dresden Files modern fantasy series is equally familiar with old-style, ‘classic’ fantasy, demonstrating his skill in complex plotting and vivid world crafting to masterly effect.” (Library Journal)

“Plenty of military action and some interesting revelations about Tavi’s past make this one of the best volumes yet in this entertaining series.” (Locus)

another Jim Butcher Triumph

I have loved everything that I have read by Jim Butcher so far. Listening to them just adds another layer of depth to the story. Only real criticism is I know this is taken from the CDs as the annoying trumpets still play, sometimes in the middle of a sentence, telling you that it's time to change the CD.

Great!

This is one of my favorite stories. The tale is engaging and fabulous. The reading is near perfect.

Love the book, but hate the random horns sounding throughout

Great story, great reader, but I hate those blasted horns that sound randomly throughout. That is the only reason I cannot give the performance the full five starts that the reader deserves.

This Series Deserves a Better Reader

Kate Reading's accent is wholly unsuited to this series. Important but unrelated proper names are indistinguishable when read by reading. For example, "Carna," the world the series takes place in, "Canim," one of the races that inhabits Carna, and "Carnea," the continent the Canim live on, all sound the same when Reading reads them.

Off; on; off; on! *wait for it*

I love this series. I like that the narrator is consistent and the same for all the books.
I HATE the stupid fan fare trumpets.

Great Book, Great Reading, WTF TRUMPETS?!

Jim Butcher is an excellent writer and I have read this series twice before. I’ve been going through and listening to the Audible versions while I work. Kate Reading does an excellent job reading. But GREAT FURIES! Those crow begotten trumpets not only sound AWFUL, but their placement makes no sense whatsoever and just takes you out of the moment!
