A shot taken....
A new enemy revealed....
Lynn has been rescued from deep within the heart of a night runner lair. The answer to why she was taken remains a mystery. Sandra lies in a pool of her own blood, ending her desperate measures to draw Jack to her. As Red Team celebrates their joy of Lynn's freedom, they are unaware that a sight is centered on them from afar. A bullet tears through the air, streaking their way.
Harold discovers information that stuns the small group of survivors and further threatens their fragile handhold on existence. They have overcome one challenge only to find that a new, more dangerous one replaces it. There's more to this new world than Jack ever suspected.
With only a single team at his disposal, Greg is sent to continue the search for survivors. Separated from the group, and unable to call for help, the small group must journey along lonely and perilous back roads in the hope of finding family members. In the end, Greg must decide between saving others and the safety of his team. Meanwhile, with the crew anxious to get home, Captain Leonard sails down the western seaboard to search for answers as he struggles to come to grips with the world.
The group tries to stay one step ahead, but there's trouble infiltrating from the north. And Michael is stirring from within the depths of his lair.
The winds of change are blowing....

I Love a great supernatural tale, a Love story, PNR, a Cool Mystery and Most Sci-Fi....if there are vampires, weres or witches in it, that's a plus! Basically I am a 40+ y/o young at heart woman rediscovering the wonderful world of books and am now addicted! Lol I LOVE AUDIBLE!!!!!
Interesting, truthful, sad
I liked the multiple story lines...and really realizing that only Jack's group wants to rescue others...The other groups are only thinking of themselves...and the one group is kind of maniacal....They are dangerous to everyone!
JACK...do you even have to ask? lol
Ally....oh how that broke my heart!
I am on to book 9 now...This was a bit of a different twist on this tale, and I can see how some people liked it, and some people were on the fence...I happened to have liked it..it really showed the different aspects of what you could expect in an apocalyptic world..People are more dangerous than the night runners are...people can be cruel and selfish...We had another sad loss in this book...and it was really heartbreaking...we also meet some new people...some good, some really bad..and we do see there really is a conspiracy going on..even in an almost empty world, there are people who will vie for control no matter what the cost!
this book is so good I love the series can't wait for the next book the cliff hangers are awful lol makes it hard to wait for the next book thanks for the awesome book john
I have read some reviews that did not like the narrator... I like him, he portrays the characters nicely and is entertaining to listen to.
Love Fantasy, Horror, And Post Apocalyptic books.
love the story! listened to the first 7 books and can't wait to get the rest in the series!
John O'Brien has outdone himself with this series. Jack Walker has become one of my favorite characters! Mark Gagliardi really brings the story to life.
This part of the story line allows us to see how other team members think and feel, with every loss and every gain it becomes more real, more personal. I've read the story already but hearing it makes it feel like the first time, got me emotional in some situations. Just keeps me coming back for more.
The rescue of a team member's sister and what she must have gone through before realizing her brother was there.
haven not heard him in other narratives but I do like him on this one
The death of a beloved member of the group
John O'Brien has kept me glued to this series. Jack Walker is still struggling to find a way to keep his family and friends and any one he takes under his protection, taking on much of the burden of protection and survival of the group. Yes he knows there are others that are capable and he asks for their opinions and values them. While everyone has a role that assists with the running of the compound and the safety of the group, he feels the weight of responsibility harder and it is perhaps the reason the group is doing so well. Even after the death of his daughter he continues on because after all he extracted the teams from sure death and has brought them home. He's found a relatively safe haven and bringing in more survivors when possible. He has accomplished what the government could not; begin to rebuild what is left of civilization, giving them hope. But nothing comes without a price as he well knows and now a greater danger looms as a clandestine group has reared it's ugly head and are intent on the domination. They are very people responsible for the state of the world, although they never imagined it would lead to the mutations that have occurred. Determined to continue with their plans, they will not abide any group as well disciplined as Jack's for it could undermine their plans. He is targeted for death and team of mercenaries are sent to kill him with devastating results. But there is also a team that is heading further inland in search of the family members and possibly other survivors. What they encounter is sad as well as horrifying, as if the Night Runners weren't enough. In the New World no one is safe, mutations aside, as the worst of humanity is unleashed on a population that is on the verge of extinction. I read the series and am enjoying it more now that I'm listening to it. Mark Gagliardi does a very good job in the narrative and probably why I'm still listening to it.
Finally get answers, however the generic already done why of the story made me frown. I still love the series and will finish it however!
2 major things stick out, the why of the story which I already touched on and the repetiveness of some dialogue. Book after book Jack had the same "I promise I'll stop you from getting experience."
Just this series but I've enjoyed him from book 1 on. He got a lot of hate in the earlier novels but I felt like he's been spot on the whole time.
Yes, another major death. Both author and narrator do an amazing job of portraying sorrow.
Great book and amazing series, I just can't get over the why of it all. I just read this exact same story arc from another big zombie series.
At first I wasn't buying the story plot of this book. Group of old men, looking to rule and this Vicious Mossad Agent and her crew still carrying out orders after the world has been devastated beyond what they all imagined. I figure once everything and population as been destroyed to this degree and with the night runners another unexpected horror that in reality most people are looking to save loved ones or running for safety not still carrying out rule the world orders from a group who destroyed the world. But John is a great writer and pulled the story together and it ended up a great book. Great move on not making the whole story about this sinister group.
