Publisher's summary

Exploding from the pages of Horror, Humor, and Heroes, Volume One - it’s the full length adventures of the one and only Mechani-Cal! So grab your battlesuit and prepare to get a little nasty.

"Being a supervillain means never having to say you’re sorry - unless it’s to the judge or the parole board. Even then, you don’t really have to. It’s not like it’s going to change the outcome or anything." Those are the words of Calvin Matthew Stringel, better known as Mechani-Cal. He’s a down-on-his-luck armored villain. Follow his exploits as he gets swept up in a world domination scheme gone wrong and ends up working for these weak willed, mercy loving heroes. Immerse yourself in epic battles and see what it’s like to be an outsider looking in at a world that few have ever experienced. Climb into Cal’s battlesuit and join him on his journey. Will he avoid selling out his principles for a paycheck and a pardon? Can he resist the camaraderie of being on a super team? Does he fall prey to the ample charms of the beautiful Olympian Aphrodite? How will he survive the jealous schemes of Ultraweapon, who wears armor so powerful it makes Cal’s look like a museum piece?

See the world of “righteous do-gooders” through the eyes of someone who doesn’t particularly care for them. Revel in his sarcasm and hang on for one wild ride! Just remember: losing an argument with a group of rioters isn’t a good excuse to start lobbing tear gas indiscriminately at them. You’ve only got so many rounds and it’s going to be a long day, so make sure you get as many as possible with each one.

Narration is very bad

The story is okay. But the narrator is very distracting and makes it difficult to do focus on the story. He keeps gasping for air after every sentence. It is so loud every time he takes breath. He sounds very agitated, like he's running a marathon. He must be too close to the microphone. He needs better technique.

Not your typical...

I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to quit being a lazy Audible Member. Having just now completed Jim Berheimer's complete 'D-List' Series, I'd like to say, Wow! It was such a refreshing and unique take on what it's like to be the (super)hero no one wants, but everyone needs... all while fighting the very normal human dilemmas we all face. Love, hate, jealousy, need for acceptance and of course issues with dear old Mom & Dad.
This is not a Heavy Read, but a very enjoyable diversion with a great narrator and Super (pun intended) relatable characters.
Although different in style and elements, I found myself enjoying Jim Bernheimer's craft as much as Larry Correia, Kevin Hearn and Rick Gualtieri.
Give it a spin and see which characters you related to and which ones live in your world even now.
Best Wishes & Good Reading to All... PHL

Can a Supervillain save the world?

I recently listened to Confessions of a D-LIST Supervillain. This is the second book in the D-LIST Supervillain series.
MechaniCal continues his adventures in this book. The end of the world is upon us, courtesy of what appears to be alien mind controlling creatures attaching themselves to peoples bodies and taking over their minds.
Isolated and alone, courtesy of his powered armor, MechaniCal faces a critical decision. Either save the human race or die of boredom and starvation. Thankfully, no one is aware or they might object to having a dishonorable supervillain trying to save them.
The book is extremely well narrated and the narrator is a great match for the main character.
Conclusion: This is a great book for everyone. If this sounds even vaguely interesting I suggest picking it up for a fun read.

Great Narrator to Book match up

Great narrator to book match up. I can totally see / hear / feel what happens through the book.
Lots of occasionally over the top action, fun, my belief was totally suspended on several occasions.
Like the overall series as well.

What a Supers Novel Is Supposed to Be

This is what a superhero (I don’t really think Mechani-Cal is a supervillain) novel is supposed to be. It starts with a bang and keeps the explosions coming through the end of the novel. Cal may be the last human being in the world still free of the mind control of the “bugs”—a dastardly plot by the Evil Overlord that got out of control. The first part of the novel focuses on how Cal literally saves the world—and then, once again, gets screwed by the supposed heroes who think it will not look good if a D-List Villain saves the planet instead of them.

It’s also the story of Cal’s rivalry with Ultraweapon—a “hero” who isn’t all that good a guy (a common theme in supervillain-based series). His company has stolen from Cal a couple of times now and struggle to make his life hell and, of course, the heroes mostly support him in doing so. Watching Cal try to rebuild himself and his life as a hero made for a great story—especially when it was the so-called heroes who were often his biggest problem.

Perfection.

A fantastic superhero book. Perfection when combined with its predecessor - humor, sex, brain-controlling superbugs. This book has it all.

Good fun

Some books are like sandwiches: not fancy, but tasty and nourishing. This is one of those. It was worth a credit.

This is a GREAT story!

This is my first listen to a Jim Bernheimer book and it was great. He does an excellent job developing characters and puts together a really interesting plot. The good guys and bad guys were well thought out.
The best part of this book was the humor. The author does a great job of making you understand what the characters are going through.
The Narrator (Jeffrey Kafer) does an excellent job with all of the voices, and I would love to listen to him again.
