Publisher's summary

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans - an alpha-strain werewolf - and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

interesting and different take

A new way to view those big old bed and breakfasts. With a story that captures your attention from the first few paragraphs they feed info about this Inn and all it really is by creating a great story to introduce this new world angle. Enjoyed this so much this is my 3rd listen.

Good...but this is missing something

This was a good book, but not as good as Ilona Andrews normally writes...in my very humble opinion. I am a huge fan of the Kate Daniels series so I was expecting something as good as that series, but this one just isn't it. Even with that being said, please do not misunderstand me thinking this was not a good book, because it is. However, for the first time every I found myself a little disappointed in Renee Raudman. For some strange reason the character was supposed to be in her early 20's but she sounded like she was in her late 70's. Also, there was a bit of overacting that drove me crazy!!!! (P.S. I'm sorry Renee cause I really love your narration normally).

Ok so enough of the negatives, lets talk about the good. There were really funny moments that I wasn't expecting that I found myself literally laughing out loud to. I also liked the little romance aspect and the two guys competing for the main character.

All in all, I would still recommend this book. But I would say if you have never read an Ilona Andrews novel, please do not be turned off by this review or this book. This is a pretty interesting writing team that writes some of the most intriguing stories.

Similar universe to Kate Daniels, circa 2014, decent fluff

But that’s about it. I feel like they waited til the last two hours to get really into the story with the action and the love triangle and the world building was so so. Also, off planet (portal) travel to a different world as a quick trip? Come on, that could have been a blast to read. Overall, fun fluff while cooking.

Fun story, off putting narration

I liked the story. The world was deep and alive. Things had happened to our MC, she had history that came up, but none of it felt like “I missed something.”
The world had a lot of history too. At first the different names for planets/races/things was a struggle, but the more they were used the easier things got.
The storyline itself was fun and engaging. Every plot point well developed, and no obvious holes.
My main qualm was the narration. The MC was 25 years old but the narrator sounded 70. It was really weird when the romance scenes were happening and in my head this 28yo man is getting hot and bothered by a granny. I mean…everyone deserves love but… yeah… it was weird.

Fantastic as always

Seriously, Ilona Andrews’ books are just so good. How can a book with this name be as good as it is. Running to get book 2.
