Publisher's summary

Of all the hosts of Eurotas, the Troias were the most fell. For they were born of Winter.

Between the Solar Array Pumped Laser and Troy, the two-trillion-ton nickel-iron battlestation created by eccentric billionaire Tyler Vernon, Earth has managed to recapture the Sol system from their Horvath conquerors and has begun entering the galactic millieu. But when the Rangora Empire rapidly crushes humanity's only ally, it becomes clear the war is just beginning.

At the heart of nickel, iron, and starlight are the people, Marines, Navy, and civilians who make Troy a living, breathing, engine of war. Survivors of apocalypse, they know the cost of failure. If this Troy falls, no one will be left to write the epic.

Citadel continues the saga begun in Live Free or Die, following the paths of several characters during the first years of The Spiral Arm Wars, culminating in the First Battle of E Eridani.

Critic reviews

"[Boyett's] voice is clear, and he affects slightly different voices to differentiate between the various characters. The overall result is effective, and listeners will be drawn in." ( AudioFile)

Over all this is a decent story.

Another decent installment, however, this series ends I disaster. You have been warned! Ringo starts off so strong with great ideas and then must get bored.

Compelling and Wonderful!

This second book in the Troy Rising series is great. The author changes the pace up a bit by introducing new characters and prospective while maintaining the older prospective of some of the characters from the first book. Still, it isn't confusing like other books but rather is very well written. I highly recommend this series.

Love this series!!

Haven't done sic-if in awhile but this series is really good. I love the hard core sci-if mixed with great humor.

fun story, great characters

Ringo is very much in his story telling element with the small band of fighters in a very large conflict. For all the procedural pieces in this story he keeps it fun and the story never feels stalled.

Good, but...

The first two hours were simply filler that wasted time. After you get past that it's vintage Ringo - high tech and space battles. Looking forward to book 3.

"For they were born of Winter"

Welcome to the New Age of warfare. Welcome to Troy!

What happens when you build a two trillion ton battlestation? They will come. John Ringo is back with the eccentric trillionaire Tyler Vernon and his newest invention to save human space. This time it's not just Maple Syrup and big solar array mirrors, it's the largest battlestation ever created. It looks like it's just in time too, as now it's not just the Horvath that want a piece of Terran Proper. The Rangora have decided that they are tired of playing second fiddle and go to war. From the reports it looks like the Rangora have wiped out the Glatun and are now gunning for the newest members of the space age. Will Troy be enough? Can it stand, unlike it's predecessor? Or will this be another Iliad with a Rangoran Achilles conquering a human Hector?

Mark Boyett does a fantastic job continuing the Troy Rising series. Vocal thespianism at it's best.

Ringo is the best

John Ringo is without a doubt, in my mind, one of the best science fiction writers currently plying the trade.
I don't know if he grew up reading the masters (heinlien, clarke, asimov....) but I am hearing their echos in his writing. An absolute joy to listen to...........
Science Fiction like it needs to be.......(again).

This will feed your Honor Harrington addiction

What made the experience of listening to Citadel the most enjoyable?

The narrator does an excellent job, great voices and you never doubt who is who. Fantastic work, almost like a movie soundtrack.

What did you like best about this story?

It's original, well thought out, plausible and fun, all at once. The hero is a mild mannered guy who just happens to have a firece belief in freedom, and isn't going to buckle under any stinkin aliens..

What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Versatility is his game. He can make you believe you are listening to a young girl, an old man or an alien lizard, but doesn't crowd you out with overkill. The aliens are just different enough to know who they are.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would love to have done so, but I listen as I drive to work 1.5 hours each way. Made it an easy drive too..

Any additional comments?

Great series, strongly recommended if you like David Weber and Honor Harrington. Written on par with those stories.

Great book!

I love getting to keep exploring this great universe, and it's bizzare inhabitants, and situations.

Occasional details of paint drying

So this book was way better than the first. A lot more action and the characters were actually likable. They should’ve written it like this book. Would’ve been a great start. Yes you still have your detailed rendition of paint drying, but not as much. It actually had me engaged. So now I start onward to book three and hope the reviews are wrong. Cuz on book 1 they were waaaaaaaaay off.
