Publisher's summary

The planet Lusitania is home to three sentient species: the Pequeninos, a large colony of humans, and the Hive Queen, who was brought there by Ender Wiggin. But now, once again, the human race has grown fearful; the Starways Congress has gathered a fleet to destroy Lusitania. Ender's oldest friend, Jane, an evolved computer intelligence, can save the three sentient species of Lusitania. She has learned how to move ships outside the universe, and then instantly back to a different world, abolishing the light-speed limit. But it takes all the processing power available to her, and the Starways Congress is shutting down the network of computers in which she lives, world by world.

Soon Jane will not be able to move the ships. Ender's children must save her if they are to save themselves.

Children of the Mind is the fourth book in Orson Scott Card's The Ender Saga.

Critic reviews

"This is a worthy ending to what might be styled a saga of the ethical evolution of humanity, a concept seldom attempted before and never realized with the success Card achieves here." (Booklist)

"Card's prose is powerful." (Publishers Weekly)

Better

This book has a lot more of the same bickering and bloviation found in a previous novel in this line, but it's somehow less irritating and easier to empathize with the characters despite this fact. This book is both sci-fi and philosophical in nature and more entertaining than the previous installment.

Fascinating and provocative

Rarely is philosophy so well-played on a stage filled with action. Card blends three or four story threads at a time, and, like Tom Clancy, tears you away just when you thought you were comfortable with the new thread. And all this played against questions about what we are, both as individuals and a species. He is brilliant. This book puts real punch in the Ender Saga. A great listen if you're running 100 miles, as I was.

Children of the Mind

Children of the Mind was great like all books in the ender series. they always leave you with something more to think about. can't wait to start the shadow series. I'm also glad they had us read Enders Game @ school, it got me started.

best book so far

I love philosophy, and this book provides some very interesting prospective in that regard. I can't wait to listen to the next book

Not Bad

I enjoyed this story, but not as much as I had hoped. I loved the previous ones, but this one just seemed a bit lazy. Parts of the story i couldn't stop listening to, and then others I just started laughing because of how ridiculous the writing was. Maybe it's just me.

One narrator terrible

The narrator for the hive Queen, Valentine and Wang-mu is terrible. She reads with a melodramatic tone that seems to sigh with every sentence. She puts on what I assume is meant to be a Chinese accent, but sounds more like a 1940s caricature of far easteners. This is tiresome and makes the book hard to listen to; even unbearable at times. The other narrators are, however, quite good.

The story is good if you enjoyed Xenocide as well. It's more fantasy than sci-fi, but still a good read. It explores the same themes as the previous books and brings them to a satisfying conclusion.

Deeply Philosophical, Virtually No Action! But Satisfying

Mr. Card thought of it all in this book. It starts slow and goes into the inner workings of the Enderverse introducing new concepts, characters, cultures, capabilities, and civilizations. If you enjoy mind expanding literature, and you have a solid grasp of the Enderverse from the previous books in the series (including Ender in Exile, may I add—because it will help you understand Val better), then you are sure to enjoy this journey and, if you’re like me, find yourself wishing for more. Yes, that was a run on sentence. This is why I’m a musician, not a writer.
