Publisher's summary

The sand-blasted world of Arrakis has become green, watered, and fertile. Old Paul Atreides, who led the desert Fremen to political and religious domination of the galaxy, is gone. But for the children of Dune, the very blossoming of their land contains the seeds of its own destruction. The altered climate is destroying the giant sandworms, and this in turn is disastrous for the planet's economy. Leto and Ghanima, Paul Atreides's twin children and his heirs, can see possible solutions - but fanatics begin to challenge the rule of the all-powerful Atreides empire, and more than economic disaster threatens.

Featured Article: Dune (2021)—Book vs. Movie

The very first book to win the Nebula Award, Frank Herbert's Dune has long been a fixture of the sci-fi world. It's no surprise, then, that yet another filmmaker has taken a stab at bringing this classic to the screen. The latest effort, by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, captures the first half of the epic novel. The reviews have been generally positive, with critics and audiences blown away by the scale and sheer ambition of the adaptation. Overall, Villeneuve's 2021 adaptation of Herbert's sci-fi classic is quite faithful. But in what small ways does the film differ from the book?

Duke Geek

I’ve read the original six Herbert books numerous times, but this narration really brought it to life and allowed the complexities of the material to really flourish in my mind. He does a fantastic job of creating a separation of characters without sounding like a falsetto cartoon. Really loved it. now on to God Emperor…

Intriguing and profound!

I must admit that this text was a very intriguing and profound read! The storyline was a great encapsulation of the previous two books keeping you in full suspense waiting for the next exciting moment around the bend! I think the author did a great job at following the storyline.

The Spice must flow

its the 3rd mainline dune book. It follows up the second book time skipping a bit to when paul's children have reached adolescents. It mostly follows Leto II but also focuses on his sister, duncan idaho, and Alia mainly. it deals a lot with how Leto and the other characyers deal with managing the people and themselves after his father, who is seen as a god, passes. Overall i enjoyed it more than Dune Messiah but theres a lot more going on in this book. The voice work is solid although they dont give characters there own voice as much as the last books.

Grand storytelling

This third volume in the Dune series carries the complexity and nuance of Herbert’s deepest thinking within a finely wrought tale of courage, betrayal and destiny. Highly recommended to those who enjoy the truth within science fiction.

My favorite book in the series so far

SPOILERS
Really enjoyed children of Dune, it felt a lot like the second half of the first book, it was fast paced and exciting. My only complaint is I think I drank had a hard time balancing all the characters through the story as a whole, after Leto and Ghanima split up and Ghani mind controls herself to believe her brother is dead by the hands of house Corrino, she really drops out of the plot for too long. But all things considered it is a huge story with many many characters and Herbert handles it smoothly.

A 5 Star Performance But...

For some reason one narrator does 99% of the performance and then the remaining is patched over with a another. It was noticable and annoying. While the range of the primary narrator was astounding (why I gave a 4 star instead of something less) this book would have been better served with a full cast.
The mix of philosophy, politics and religion is, as always, an amazing experience. Though I was a little put off by the creative putty Herbert seemed to use in the introduction of a creature that was central to Dune ecology and well known by the Fremen. Also, that creatures affect on Leto II was a bit over the top. It felt like Herbert introduced a radioactive spider into his storyline just to easily move it along. Regardless, more than worth the credit. Enjoy!

Good overall, quality issues

Overall the actor was excellent. Not the strongest of the series, but better than Messiah.

Spoilerish complaint follows regarding the audio production:

The production team completely dropped the ball at the end. The last 2 chapter intros are read by a completely different actor who couldn't be more bored, with a completely different audio mastering approach. Jarring immersion breaker at the culmination of the plot.

A great story with a quality voice-over

Great story. Only complaint: sometimes (rarely), voices change unexpectedly, as if patched in later to fill missing parts, which breaks immersion a bit
