Publisher's summary

In his acclaimed Codex Alera novels, best-selling author Jim Butcher has created a fascinating world in which the powerful forces of nature take physical form. For millennia, the people of Alera have used their unique bond with these elementals for protection. Now, as enemies become allies, and friends become bitter foes, a danger beyond reckoning looms....

Critic reviews

“Sharp tactical plotting, hazardous cross-country travel and a dash of sardonic humor mark Butcher's fourth Codex Alera novel...Butcher deftly deploys intrigue, conflicted loyalties and hairbreadth action to excellent effect. Few writers balance military realism and cinematic swashbuckling with so much skill or wit.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The fourth Codex Alera novel further develops the world and characters of its predecessors and confirms Butcher's mastery of action-filled fiction.” (Booklist)

“I couldn't put this one down...Great work.” (SF Revu)

another brilliant book in the series

this is yet another brilliant addition to the series. they just keep getting better and better. I'm glad i started this series and can't wait to start the next book. If you haven't read anything else Butcher has written, i strongly suggest you do. He has an astounding writing ability and has quickly become one of my favorites next to Larry Correa and Brandon Sanderson. I'd check them out as well, they are just as good in my book. hope this helps some of you reading this.

This series just keeps getting better

Jim Butcher is just a tremendous storyteller and the voice actor does an excellent on delineating all the different characters!

moves the overall story along well

Overall this was very enjoyable. A bit predictable based on genre but still fun to read. Obviously a middle-book of a series and didn't have any little surprises like the previous books, but didn't get bogged down in its own flow. Necessary ground covered in an enjoyable story.

Compelled to keep listening

I've enjoyed all of the Codex Alera audiobooks so far, but this is the one I felt compelled to keep listening to. I would find excuses to go run errands in the car just so I could keep listening.

Love this series

If you could sum up Captain's Fury in three words, what would they be?

Action, Adventure, Intrigue.

What other book might you compare Captain's Fury to and why?

I found it to be similar in style to David Gemmell's work. The way the plot flows along with the gravity of certain characters are very alike. The descriptiveness of combat and tactics also fits in well with his styling.

What about Kate Reading’s performance did you like?

I enjoy her voice. The only thing that I dislike would be her voicing of Bernard. The groaning is a bit off-putting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed at a few points, but the entire book kept me highly involved.

Very intense.

Bit of Harry Potter mixed with Star Wars. Very enjoyable. A lot of suspense, a lot of action.

This (and book 3) are the best books in the series

This is my second time reading the series. I'm far less patient with the constant POV shifting in the middle of high action, and the parts in the swamp are a boring and stressful as they were the first time, but the events of this and Cursor's Fury are by far the most satisfying and memorable of the series. The Vord (aka xenomorph borg) aren't as compelling as antagonists when compared to the interesting and well executed political shenanigans that happen in these two books. Also, its great seeing Tavi grow into his power and confidence, it's super well earned.

Freaking Isana, though. I get her character, I do, but arg, I'm still so mad. Also, from here on out we get the character assassination of Invidia, which is a real shame, because up till now she was *supremely* compelling as a character.

Anyway, this whole series is good, I like it alot, and this is my favorite part of it. Just be warned that the pacing of the action is typically relentless, but if you're this far in the series, you know that.

Very very good

Loved it? yes, yes!!
Struggled through the long travel parts,
Needed longer scenes with Tavi and KItay. But those are small imperfactions-nothing major...
The narrator was perefect, she is amazing.
Listen to the book, you will enjoy it, I promise.
