Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Winner, Science Fiction, 2014

Captain Ivan Vorpatril is happy with his relatively uneventful bachelor's life as a staff officer to a Barrayaran admiral. Cousin to imperial troubleshooter Miles Vorkosigan, Ivan is not far down the hereditary list for the emperorship. Thankfully, new heirs have directed that headache elsewhere, leaving Ivan to enjoy his life on Komarr, far from the Byzantine court politics of his home system. But when an old friend in Barrayaran intelligence asks Ivan to protect an attractive young woman who may be on the hit list of a criminal syndicate, his chivalrous nature takes over. It seems danger and adventure have once more found Captain Vorpatril.

Tej Arqua and her half-sister and servant, Rish, are fleeing the violent overthrow of their clan on free-for-all planet Jackson’s Whole. Now it seems Tej may possess a secret of which even she may not be aware - a secret that could corrupt the heart of a highly regarded Barrayaran family and provide the final advantage for the thugs who seek to overthrow Tej’s homeworld. But none of Tej’s formidable adversaries have counted on Ivan Vorpatril. For behind Ivan’s facade of wry and self-effacing humor lies a true and cunning protector who will never leave a distressed lady in the lurch - making the ultimate sacrifice to keep her from harm: the treasured and hard-won freedom from his own fate as a scion of Barrayar.

Lois McMaster Bujold is one of the most honored writers of science fiction and fantasy, having won five Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards. In 2011 she was awarded the Skylark Award for her significant contributions to science fiction.

    "Ivan Alone"

It was fun to listen to a book starring Ivan alone. I wondered how
Bujold would handle Ivan as the protaganist. She kept him in character but allowed his smarts to show. I recommend this book without reserrvation, especially to Bujold fans.

"Great segue to a new series (I hope)"

I admit it, I'm a Bujold fan. So, I was extremely happy to find this title. At first, the reader put me off. He uses the whangy twang of the privileged few. Soon it seems absolutely appropriate.

The story line is not only interesting but also amusing. It reveals the inner and outer life of a minor actor in the Vorkosigan saga that shows him as more than a side kick. Of course, with friends like his, you don't need enemies and complications will ensue. But, for a plot outline, see the blurb above.

Know that you need not have read any of the Vorkosigan books to enjoy this one.

"I loved every second of it!!!"

Lois McMaster Bujold created another masterpiece. I love her stories. I was sad to see the Miles stories to be over, but I find Ivan just as intriguing. Grover Gardner did an amazing job too.

"Read the entire Vorkosigan series, then read this"
What made the experience of listening to Captain Vorpatril's Alliance the most enjoyable?

I can't wait to get back in the car to listen to the next chapter. A new plot twist just at the right moment . . . over and over again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance?

If you love Bujold's Vorkosigan universe, this book brings together the events and the people of a dozen prior books with new viewpoints and revelations.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

The role of Ivan Vorpatril had been under-developed before this book. You will like the trouble Ivan can get himself into . . . . and out of.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just when all seems lost, Ivan finds a novel use for breakfast cereal.

    "A Little Bland"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I love the Vor world that Ms. McMaster Bujold has created. It feels real to me and I want to know what happens to these people I've come to know. But this book just makes me miss Miles. It's like attending a family reunion only to find out that your favorite cousin isn't coming. Not a bad book, but Ivan just isn't as interesting as Miles. After reading this book I re-read Memory. In retrospect, this book feels more like an Afterword. I'm glad to know what became of Ivan but can't see myself ever reading this one again.

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

I love Mr. Grover's performances. I always feel that he loves the material as much as I do and takes great care to accurately portray the author's intention.

    "An excellent Vorkosigan spinoff."

Really nice spin off, I enjoyed it as much as any Miles Vorkosigan novel. I hope it's not the last one!

    "An interesting sub-plot book"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is an interesting sub-plot to the Miles Vorkosegan series. Not a lot of action, but still a good read. Highly recommended for those that have the other books in the series.

"Long live the Empire! Bujold & Gardner are great"
Would you consider the audio edition of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version but it would be hard to believe the print could do as good a job of conveying the warmth and humor which Grover Gardner puts into this book. His ability as a narrator has caused me to buy more than one bookwhich I would otherwise have avoided.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance?

The scene where everybody has been rescued from the lab / vault and the Impsec building is sinking into the ground has got to be the high point of the novel. However, it was a close call since Vorpatril's wedding is a very close runner up.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Grover Gardner is probably one of the best narrators ever. His capacity to express warmth without turning a passage maudlin and to convey dry humor and irony are unsurpassed by anyone.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The fall and rise of the last great Vor bachelor.

    Any additional comments?

I've enjoyed reading each of this series as Lois McMaster Bujoldd carried it from a somewhat whacky, teenish tale of an insecure young man to a complex universe with fully developed characters who act in accordance with their history and experiences. She almost makes me believe the old saw about the best form of government being a benevolent dictator. Her humor tends toward the dry and ironic and it is plentiful. I'm not sure I would have gotten hooked on this series if it had not been for Grover Gardner but his narration and Lois McMaster Bujold's excellent writing have me impatient for more books in this series. I've even resorted to rereading some of the books which I already have.

"FINALLY IVAN GETS TO BE THE STAR"
If you could sum up Captain Vorpatril's Alliance in three words, what would they be?

    Funny, engrossing, satisfying

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ivan, of course, the protagonist, but the supporting cast was wonderfully creative and well realized, and it was fun to see By again, especially in a more fully formed character.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love being read to, and he does a wonderful job of voicing multiple characters

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    many

    Any additional comments?

If you haven't read or listened to Bujold's Vorkosegan series I envy you, because you can enjoy them for the first time, while I am on my 2nd, 3rd or even 4th or 5th time (and I still love the series). Ivan has ben a supporting player since the 2nd book (?second half of the first book, depending on how you look at it), and it was fun to see him as the subject of his own story. Like his mother, many of us wondered if he would ever get married--or meet his match--this was a very satisfying end to that story arc.

    "Love the series"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story continues on Barryar! (or how ever you spell it) This is a great addition to the series, even with little Miles in it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance?

    Listening to their relationship gor.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the characters to live with his inflection, tone and knowledge of the characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yep.

    Any additional comments?

Great book. I hope Lois stays in good health, because I want to read a lot more.
