Publisher's summary

A new entry in the critically acclaimed Caine Riordan science fiction series by three-time Nebula nominee Charles E. Gannon! Science fiction on a grand scale. Prequels Raising Caine, Trial by Fire, and Fire with Fire were all Nebula Award finalists. Charles E. Gannon is also the winner of the Compton Crook Award.

Caine Riordan, fresh from serving as envoy to the aliens known as the Slaasriithi, has been given yet another daunting task: apprehend raiders that are terrorizing a distant planet.

As difficulties mount, Caine becomes aware that the mission his superiors sent him to perform may not be the one they actually hope he will achieve. Which means Caine may be forced to choose between honoring a promise to friends and following orders - a choice that could ultimately put him in front of a board of inquiry. Or a firing squad.

Another good book

Charles Gannon has written another excellent installment to the Caine Riordan series. You will need to read the previous books to understand the plot, given that it builds directly from Book 3 of the series with almost no catch-up for anyone picking up this book first, but it is a fun, good story.

Awesome!

Another great entry in the Caine Riordan series. Plenty of dialogue, military discussions involving strategy and tactics, lots of action, and my favorite part of these books: Riordan one-upping his rivals in negotiations and political dialog.

At 32 hours this was by far the longest audiobook I've listened to. Certainly the longest of the four in this series. And when I state that fact, I state it as a favorable trait. It was a very worthwhile listen, and not a moment too long.

Caine at his Best again!

I loved this one again as much as the three books before. Can't wait until it continues...

A good, but not great entry in the series.

This was a good entry in the series, but it seems much slower than the other books. Given the length of the book, it probably could have been a little shorter and been more exciting.

Least of the series.

It devolves into lenghty lectures about globalist justifications for their policies, strawmen of positions no one ever actually held and it fits very poorly into the story.
The author might consider checking his own baggage at the door when writing his next book.
Worth it if the next book in the series doesn't commit the same dull diatribes but goes back to what makes this series worthwhile.
