Publisher's summary

The sequel to the New York Times best seller Off Armageddon Reef

The world has changed. The mercantile kingdom of Charis has prevailed over the alliance designed to exterminate it. Armed with better sailing vessels, better guns, and better devices of all sorts, Charis faced the combined navies of the rest of the world at Darcos Sound and Armageddon Reef, and broke them. Despite the implacable hostility of the Church of God Awaiting, Charis still stands, still free, still tolerant, still an island of innovation in a world in which the Church has worked for centuries to keep humanity locked at a medieval level of existence.

But the powerful men who run the Church aren't going to take their defeat lying down. Charis may control the world's seas, but it barely has an army worthy of the name. And as King Cayleb knows, far too much of the kingdom's recent good fortune is due to the secret manipulations of the being that calls himself Merlin - a being that, the world must not find out too soon, is more than human. A being on whose shoulders rests the last chance for humanity's freedom.

Now, as Charis and its archbishop make the rift with Mother Church explicit, the storm gathers. Schism has come to the world of Safehold. Nothing will ever be the same...in David Weber's By Schism Rent Asunder.

can't wait for the next installment

This time, politics, intrigue and romance from David Weber. It doesn't seem like we moved much closer to the end of the series, but the journey is going to be a fun one.

There were some very interesting plot twists, but mostly I just keep wanting to cheer for the good guys.

Davids prose, to true S.F. enthusiasts is great.

What did you love best about By Schism Rent Asunder?

David uses his descriptive talents to make his readers truly understand what society would be like in a true schism. His heros are truly heroic. And his villains are truly vile. I imagine Martin Luthor wished for an angel with Merlin's talents.

What did you like best about this story?

The sea battles in the story line were excellent and well set up. Descriptions of the terrible carnage when your enemies broadside is well aimed worthy of Patrick O'Brien or Alexander Kent.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The talent of a narrator like Oliver Wyman makes you feel the emotions of the characters in a way reading just can't do.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Merlin understood the full impact the schism may have on the safeholdians.

Any additional comments?

All the safehold books are stand alone stories but do read the entire series.

David Weber is Awesome!

I gave this book only 4 stars because the first book in this series is so much better. The problem with this author is that he is so ADDICTING! I Have loved every book he has written and I've read or listened to at least 15 of his novels. You can't go wrong with Mr. Weber's work.

Another chapter in this great story!

Although not quite 10 stars like I gave the 1st book, this was still quite entertaining! I mistakenly said the author was the narrator in the first book but that was incorrect - it is Oliver Wyman - who has to be one of the best in my opinion - the read is quite exceptional.
This book continues the detailed and well-crafted story of Safehold - the characters, relationships, politics, military (which I was never interested in before but now am), and futuristic/history...
I can't wait until the next book!
