When Attu begins dreaming of ice mounds attacking him and a beautiful girl calling to him across deadly open water, he realizes the spirits of the Nuvikuan-na are warning his clan. The Warming is coming. The ocean ice they have lived and hunted on for generations is melting, and they must flee to the safety of an unknown land before they all drown.
In this powerful tale of survival at the end of an Ice Age, the young hunter, Attu, must choose between saving his clan or saving Rika, the golden-eyed healer he is forbidden to love.

Aside from its masterful narration, what I loved best about this book was its imaginative look into how prehistoric humans may have viewed the world, including their own rituals, fears, longings and spiritual insights. Seeing the world through their eyes gave me a fresh way of seeing through my own.
One of the most memorable moments of Breakaway was realizing that the strange new world that had been prophesied to these people, the one in which they are having so much trouble believing and trusting, is the world of solid ground, warm air, green plants and land animals that we experience every day and take for granted. While the new experiences are frightening to them as they are happening (and the listeners are truly caught up in those fears), getting to understand those new experiences in a rearview mirror helps us put those fears -- and perhaps our own fears, as well -- in a fresh perspective.
In one scene, one of the female elders proves to be the clan's spiritual leader by doing what the men have been hesitant to do -- standing up and denouncing one of their leaders for cowardice and challenging the people to stop following his faulty guidance. That may have been my favorite scene in the book.
A particularly moving moment was hearing one of the leaders of a neighboring clan give guidance to Attu after he survives a vicious bear attack, counseling Attu that unless he deals with the memories of the attack by talking about them, the bear's spirit will continue to attack him in his dreams and memories. I loved that the characters had a spiritual understanding of the world they lived in, and while we might have different understandings today, the experiences themselves are not always so different.
It must be added that the narration of this book is superb. Each character is given a distinct, living voice. Just as every word is clearly articulated and the meaning of every statement is instantly communicated, every character in the book is crystal clear and enjoyable to follow. Matthew Lloyd's voice absolutely honors the material and gives it expressive life. I hope to find other material that he has narrated!
Adventure, Courage, & Love
The bravery and ingenuity of Attu & Rika when they were surviving on the ice that had broken away from the land.
When Rika & Attu were able to declare their love for each other.
There are great moments of humor and emotional moments which pull on the heart strings of love, family, and community.
The story was wonderful and it was made even more real and entertaining by the character voices from Matthew Lloyd. He truly brought the characters to life!
I really enjoyed this book. It was suspenseful and it is great for all ages!
