Book of Shadows | [Marc Olden]

Book of Shadows

Out for kicks on a dull summer night, a few Puerto Rican boys wander Central Park. Drunk, high, and bored they hack at an old oak tree, and they don’t notice the white-haired couple appear behind them. Murmuring in an ancient tongue, the couple attacks the boys to save the oak. By the time the police arrive, two boys have been slashed to death, and their right hands cut from their bodies. Rupert and Rowena Comfort are druids, keepers of a religion that is older than civilization itself. For thousands of years they have lived in secret in the wilds of England, until the day that five Americans happen on their village and steal the book of shadows....

Publisher's Summary

To fulfill an ancient rite of vengeance, two druids descend on New York City....

Rupert and Rowena Comfort are druids, keepers of a religion that is older than civilization itself. For thousands of years they have lived in secret in the wilds of England, until the day that five Americans happen on their village and steal the book of shadows - a witch’s tome passed down by the druids for millennia. Rupert and Rowena will kill to save the book, starting with a spell whose recipe calls for the blood from two severed hands.

Would you consider the audio edition of Book of Shadows to be better than the print version?

The Audio version is very different from the print version as you are able continue your daily routine while listening. Whereas when reading a book in print form you have to physically sit down and concentrate on what you are doing. So neither one is better than the other.
What I can say about the Audible book is that you really can take it anywhere you need to,
or want to. This talking book is a rarity though as Authors such as Marc Olden are often overlooked when it comes to this kind of entertainment but they are so much better than many of the widely dispersed authors.

This book like so many of Marc Oldens books are in my mind classics of the genre and are far superior in content and imagination than many authors who are gushed over by the media as the best thing since sliced bread. But what many fail to see is that Marc Olden was a force to be reckoned with when it came to horror, suspense, and dark thrillers.

This book is and probably always will be a classic of its genre.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite characters were the Comforts, as they just oosed menace and being English added to the suspense and horror as well as the horrors that were forced upon their sacrifices.

The research that went into this book was of a standard rarely seen and the Comforts as well as all the other characters in this book seemed very real. What I can say is that as an Englishman living in England that these kind of stories are very prevailant in the countryside, there is a real society of Druids, and England is a place of witches and horror stories. You wont find it in the cities, but if you travel out into the countryside you will encounter all sorts of spooky going ons.

Have you listened to any of Jim Meskimen’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I havent listened to any other Jim Meskimen's performances, although he was very entertaining.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

An ancient horror a modern reality
