Have Mercy: listen to another Mercy Thompson chiller.
©2009 Patricia Briggs; (P)2009 Penguin
Bone Cross starts at virtually the moment that Iron Kissed ends - Mercy is still dealing with the many problems in her life and trying to recover from a horrific assault that was the climax of the previous book. It would have been so easy for Briggs to wave a magic wand and make things all better, but she doesn't, Mercy goes through each emotion as any other person would, which earned my respect. Mercy finally decides to become Adam's mate, as she realizes its him she loves and not Samuel. Before they really have a chance to talk about anything though they are interrupted by Mercy's mother ( since she's just read about her daughters rape in the newspaper.)and Stephan dropping in - literally at their feet. He's burned and starved. He tells Mercy that the Mistress now knows all, has killed his donors and thrown him out of the Seethe. And, she's after Mercy.
Drawn fully into the pack through Adams actions to protect his mate,(who knew the werewolf magic would work on a coyote-walker but it does) mercy now has to help head off a full scale war between the werewolves and the vampires as she knows she is responsible for her own actions and must own up to them (actions that happened in the last two books.) She is still dealing with her random panic attacks and intimacy issues with Adam, who stands solidly by her side even when half his pack isn't in agreement with him for his choice in a mate or for bringing her into the pack. My only compliant is that this is also a romance story and a little bit of romance between Adam and Mercy would have been nice...The intimacy and I love you's are few and far between. Jessie's feelings are never mentioned nor is how the relationship is going to process. I can't see Adam being ok with his mate continuing to live with Samuel as a roommate for much longer. I'm hoping theses issues are resolved in book 5 and we get to see more romance between Mercy and Adam with them hopefully discussing wedding plans.
Yes, over, and over again! I love these characters and stories.
Yes, hard to stop!
I love the series and can't wait for each new installment.
I like this series and this character. My favorite part is that the ill effects to Mercy's psyche from the sexual assault she suffered in the last book are VERY present. For the most part, the various panic attacks and psychological side effects of her attack are very realistic and a little off putting (in a good way) They color pretty much the whole story UNTIL Adam cures her PTSD with his dick. I mean that in the most literal fashion possible. He has sex with her, and magically, huge chunks of her problems are gone. Granted, she still suffers from some ill effects, but his magic penis somehow does the same good for her that usually takes years of therapy.
Lorelei King still does a wonderful job bringing this world to life.
Patricia Briggs rocks at making the supernatural come to life as if it could really happen in today's time. Mercy is always one character I can relate to with a very independent personality who tries to do what's right according to her gut at the moment even if it costs her life or freedom all while coming to terms with how to be a mate to an alpha werewolf of the local pack. this is by far my fave one that I listen to over and over again! love them all but in this one, all the character's come to life more than ever!
Mercy definitely knows how to get in trouble. The Narrator is excellent in her presentation. She does a wonderful job at separating the characters. This is the third time listening to the series.
Lorelei King is spellbinding as always, and Patricia Briggs kept me guessing where we were going right up until the end. If you've read the first 3 books you'll notice a lot more, sometimes repetitive, introspection in this book. I hope it's dialed back in the next book, which I can't wait to hear.
Love mercy and Adams love story. He is strong enough to allow her to be her own person although it causes him to struggle with this position . Mercy is surrounded by some extremely strange, helpful, and loving friends. They each stand out in their own unique way and even the ones who have doubts about her being he right mate for the Alpha are in awe of her ability to get he job done. I love the way she embraces her ability as a mechanic and does not allow the shallow beautiful women intimidate her.
