I may just be a visual type...

Intriguing alternate world and engaging story, but I sometimes had trouble following.

In general, my reading comprehension is better than my than listening comprehension, so that may be in play. However, I noticed a few "mis-steps" in reading, and I wonder if there are others that I didn't catch, but decreased my understanding and, therefore, enjoyment of the story.

I have noticed this with other established (and fantastic) authors; the narrator misses cadence, phrasing, pronunciation, and/or emphasis and thereby makes the story harder to comprehend. I understand that reading aloud is definitely a difficult skill, but the proof is in the pudding, and my "pudding" felt a bit muddled.

Good story, bad narrator.

Natalie Gold has a very flat narrative voice. No emotion, no unflection. I almost stopped listening. Near the end she improved a little. I will try the next in the series, but I doubt I will buy any other stories narrated by her.

Wonderful!!

That was awesome!
Faith Hunter brought such vivid detail! Great fight scenes, "belly flipping" sexual tension. All around enjoyable book.

Pleasantly surprised

I don’t usually read this genre of fantasy, more science fiction than urban paranormal fiction, but I love Faith Hunter’s books so I decided to try it. This was fabulous. It’s well written and even though it’s a first in the series the character development is spectacular. It’s not going to be for everyone but it is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Something seems to be missing...

I was excited about this book as the description sounds fun and different. I was really suprised to find that i could not get into the story. I liked that the main character owned a gem shop as i love gemstones and jewelry and could totally relate. However, that is about it. I love this genre of books but there is something critical missing here. Around 5 hours into the book, i found that the book was just not keeping my interest at all! I was trying to concentrate on the story, but would constantly find myself lost and wondering what was going on. I must have played chapters 11-13 about 9 times before giving up and going on in attempt to get through it. Then i gave up entirely a couple chapters later. I hate it when i am counting down the time to get through a book just to be able to finish it. I don't want to waste anymore time on this book when there are much better titles in my library. Perhaps i will try this again some day...then again, perhaps not.

I really wanted to l ike this book

What was most disappointing about Faith Hunter’s story?

Too much details muddied up a good story. I listened for 5 hours and was so numbed by the details- ad nausea that when something exiting was happening I didn't recognize it untiil it was too late and I had to rewind to hear it!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She is somewhat monitone. Nothing in her voice really distinguished a battle scene from describing what her outfit she was wearing.....BTW main character has an exhaustive wardrobe.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I think there is a good story trying to break out of a lot of wothless details.

Any additional comments?

If there was an abridged copy available I MIGHT try it again.

Disappointing - not like Jane Yellowrock

Thought this would be better since author did such a great job with the Jane Yellowrock series. Story is not as interesting and the narrator far less gifted.

i think there was a good story trying to get out

i gave up on this after 5 hours. the narrator is SO boring. I just could not get into the story because of her dull, monotonous delivery. very cross, as another wasted credit. Audible. why can you not make samples LONGER?
