It may just be a subpar narrator...

Would you try another book from Faith Hunter and/or Natalie Gold?

I love the skin walker series so had high hopes for this one. I think the performance is so lacking by Gold that much of the story is lost. She has many mispronunciations, very little differentiation between characters' voices making it difficult at times to know who is speaking and doesn't catch what I suspect is the subtle humor of the author which is abundant in the other series. This is a much darker fantasy than the other series but I think if I choose to continue i'll just read the e book. Not sure I'll even finish it.

How could the performance have been better?

A completely different narrator.

Was Bloodring worth the listening time?

No

Faith Hunter??

I started this series because I loved the "Jane Yellowrock books." The writing style is so different here. So many long winded sections of descriptions and meditations. In between this over explained dialogue there are terrific battles and interesting relationships. It just seems to take forever to get somewhere. The narrator cannot do great voices like Margaurite Gavin or others. Men and women sound alike. I bought this series on sale so I am going to finish them but I would not recommend unless you like tons of slow paced ramblings.

Captivating

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Truly a page turner. The action keeps you going and the concepts keep you intrigued. The underlying commentary keeps all levels of your mind intrigued and the story keeps you up at night not wanting to sleep until it's finished.

What did you like best about this story?

The interplay between the characters and the forces of the world presented and the fact that it is set near Boone, NC really helped tie me to the story.

Have you listened to any of Natalie Gold’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance I heard but It was okay. I believe the narration could have used a little less drama.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes terribly so I keep spending money hand over fist on these books.

A new series started

When I listened to this story the first time, I wasn't sure that I wanted to continue as I found the twists in the plot a bit confusing. I have given it a second go and am happier now that I have grasped all of the plot threads. I am now going to try the second in the series. B

OMG, stop w/ the soft port fantasy already!

Gave up after chapter ten. Book had a lot of promise. Dystopian alternate future history w/ Judeo-Christian overtones, angels, demons, seriphas, left over creation power, neo-mages, all good.

BUT the continual "neo mage young sweetie womain" going in and out heat - yep, like an animal - seemed to be every third page from chapter 3 to 10 and then I gave up.

narrator is flat

Story was great, narrator flat no energy in her voice. disappointed. Faith's last series narrator was full of life. This was like listening to a monotone.

Just didn't do it for me

Would you try another book from Faith Hunter and/or Natalie Gold?

I persevered with this book the whole way through but I just couldn't get into it. There are parts where I thought this could be a good story but....I don't know, it wasn't for me. And I won't continue with this series.

well doesn't really go anywhere and it doesn't do

it really doesn't go anywhere and it doesn't do it fast. the writing itself is not horrible. There's a tremendous amount of mispronunciation by the performer. three-quarters of the way of the book I kind of get sick of the I'm so tempted I'm so horny I'm so tempted all my I'm not acting very smart right now BS that continues to repeat. and nothing really happens there's a clock, somebody gets a box of rocks. somebody's kidnapped. Somebody knows something a lot of people have secrets. But that's not much for 8 hours of listening. I don't think I'm going to continue with this series and I don't even think I'm going to finish this book. If you'd like reasonable writing bad pronunciation A Bert very very slow plot progression. This may be for you

Mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about this book. It’s compelling and I like the action but it’s quite dark and a bit hard to follow at times. If this is your first read of the author, just know that her later series get a lot better.
