Publisher's Summary

The final installment of Robin Hobb’s Sunday Times best-selling series The Rain Wild Chronicles.

Dragon blood and scales, dragon liver and eyes and teeth. All required ingredients for medicines with near-miraculous healing powers. The legendary blue dragon Tintaglia is dying of wounds inflicted by hunters sent by the Duke of Chalced, who meanwhile preserves his dwindling life by consuming the blood of the dragon’s poet Selden Vestrit.

If Tintaglia perishes, her ancestral memories will die with her. And the dragons in the ancient city of Kelsingra will lose the secret knowledge they need to survive. Their keepers immerse themselves in the dangerously addictive memory-stone records of the city in the hope of recovering the Elderling magic that once allowed humans and dragons to co-exist. In doing so they risk losing their own identities, even their lives. And danger threatens from beyond the city, too. For war is coming: war between dragonkind and those who would destroy them.

What the Critics Say

"In today’s crowded fantasy market, Robin Hobb’s books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons." (George R. R. Martin)

"Hobb is superb, spinning wonderful characters and plots from pure imagination" (Conn Iggulden)

"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers… what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." (The Times)

    "Good story, terrible narrator"
What disappointed you about Blood of Dragons?

I Have read, or listened to, all the books by Robin Hobb uptil this one and she is one of my favorite fantasy writers. As an audiobook, this is a pain to get through. The narrator sounds like a newsreader on whiskey. With her voice all the characters sounds hoarse and angry and I believe this is not what Robin Hobb want to portrait. I recommend the book, but not as an audiobook.

    "Surprisingly poor."
What did you like best about Blood of Dragons? What did you like least?

Blood of Dragons finished the Rain Wild series in a most mediocre fashion. Dragons vs Chalced , hmm let me see whos gonna win...
Hess degenerated into a borderline retarded caricature of the character in the first book while all the reject keepers become cardboard placeholders.

Im sorry to give a Robin Hobb book such a poor score but this one is quite half arsed.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I was actually looking forward to see Thymara's fathers agricultural experiment in the trees but the author seems to have forgotten about the dude altogether.

How could the performance have been better?

This performance is bad! How can four books be narrated by 3 different people? Saskia Butler did best, the other 2 not so well. Changing narrators brings about different pronunciation of names which ruins continuity.

Could you see Blood of Dragons being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Er no.
Maybe a comedy adaption so bad its good?

    Any additional comments?

It hurts me to be so harsh on an author I grew up with. This series started off good but degenerated into half arsery.

If you have followed this Tangle since The Liveship Traders prepare yourself for some very happy listening. I have come to love all the keepers and their dragons over the previous three books and it was wonderful to spend time with them again. I felt like each of their victories were my own and to finally take flight with the dragons made me tear up with joy.

There is a new narrator, which is distracting, but give her time and you can get into the swing of it.

    "why change the narrator AGAIN?!?"

The first book in this series was read by Saskia Butler, then it changed to another, and ruined it, went back to the first for the third book, and now its changed to a third? Seriously why? Its ruined the series for me, as it feels 'wrong'.

I've given up listening to this series already.

"A good story, but not CAlced CHalced"

Really good story and really well read for the most part but the choice of pronounciation of key character Alyss into ARLyss and CHalced into CALced?? After listening to the first three in the series by another narrator it took me a while to work out who Anne Flosnik was talking about. You may not get what I am trying to say. Its not the end of the world by a long shot but it just wrong footed my listening. I enjoyed it and am not asking for a refund as the story was fantastic as I always expect from Robin Hobb

    "the best story ever murdered"
Would you try another book written by Robin Hobb or narrated by Anne Flosnik?

I'm a huge fan of the Rain Wild books. This was to be the best of them all with dragons finally taking to the air and so many loose ends to tie up. It utterly beggars belief that you'd get Anne Flosnik to read this. She reads like she's being paid by the word and her rent is overdue. I've never had to listen to a book at half speed before just to make it sound at least vaguely dramatic. I'm utterly and completely at a loss to recommend this to anyone based on that performance. If anything this has murdered my experience of Robin Hobb's writing and audio books in general.

    "Disappointed"

I looked forward to the release of Blood of Dragons on Audible but this is not what I was expecting. Not only has the narrator changed again but she sounds like she has a cold! Very nasal and hard to understand and the narration sounds very fast. The sound quality seems to be poor as well. Very disappointed.

    "Downhill skiing!!"

If I was trying to read a book while skiing very fast through a slalom, this is what it would sound like. Is the narrator trying to break a world record for speed reading? As others have pointed out before me, why does the publisher change narrator yet again and why choose Anne Flosnik? Dont narrators have to go though a selection process? If so, then I am GLAD Anne Flosnik was chosen because surely the others in the line up must have been even worse. This is a study in how to ruin a good book with poor narration. Ah me, I'll just buckle up my seat belt for the revved up ride though the last few pages....

Love Robin Hobb, and the Rain Wild Chronicles.
Hated the narration by Anne Flosnik, had to listen to find out what happened as had invested in the others in this series. Frankly was glad when it ended.

Would you consider the audio edition of Blood of Dragons to be better than the print version?

It would be helpful if each of the audio books had been performed by the same reader.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood of Dragons?

The battle of the dragons versus the Calsians.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The evolving relationships between the dragons and their keepers.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Blood will out!

    "Down but not out"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I think I would only recommend this book to a friend if they had read all the others in the Rainwilds Chronicles - it's good to hear the ending of a tale that was very good in parts. Overall it was below what I would expect from RH (I rate Robin Hobb's books VERY highly) ... it wasn't helped by rushed narration and poor delivery.

If you’ve listened to books by Robin Hobb before, how does this one compare?

Low, yes low I'm afraid. Going on storyline alone, this was not up to reasonable expectations.

Liveship traders / Soldier son trilogy, absolutely fantastic. Stories of such imagination & excellence. Her books can be out of this world, literally.

Would you be willing to try another one of Anne Flosnik’s performances?

I got used to AF's narration as time went on, and when she paced herself a little slower (particularly between sentences) it was ok. But I wouldn't seek her books out.

Did Blood of Dragons inspire you to do anything?

Re-read the Liveship traders trio - I am so looking forward to meeting the serpents again!

    Any additional comments?

Fool's Assassin? Bring it on!!! I already have it on order.

Where does Blood of Dragons rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Compared to other audiobooks this seemed quite average it never really gripped me at any point. The story was ok not the best ending and performance seemed a little too dramatic for me.

What other book might you compare Blood of Dragons to, and why?

I've not read too many books with dragons, only the inheritance cycle and that is much better than this.

How could the performance have been better?

Like I mentioned above it seemed a bit too dramatic for me.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, it didnt really draw me in as a lot of audiobooks previously have.
