Publisher's summary

It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

Among them was a great dreamer, an immigrant who'd pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest and most admired men in the world. That man was Andrew Ryan, and he believed that great men and women deserved better. So he set out to create the impossible: a utopia free from government, from censorship, and from moral restrictions on science, where what you gave was what you got. He created Rapture - the shining city below the sea. But this utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story of how it all came to be... and how it all ended.

Great story, not so great narrator

The narrator didn't seem to understand how to properly give an accent to characters from certain areas of the globe. At one point it sounded like someone from Dublin had an Indian accent.

Very good.

I played all the bioshock games and have been in love with the universe since the first one.
This book does a formidable job of describing the rise and fall of Rapture. I highly recommend it.

The backstory adds a lot of enjoyment to the games

The narrator wasn't the best I've heard, though he gets more appropriately animated over time and the story itself isn't going to be winning awards, but if you are the slightest bit interested in Bioshock 1 and 2, then this will fill in some gaps in the game's story and enrich your understanding and enjoyment of both games. This doesn't discuss anything from Bioshock Infinite. After reading this book, I went back to play the game and really found that I appreciated a lot of the nuances quite a bit more.

If you haven't yet played the games, play at least the first one before reading this book, as it does contain "spoilers" for both games.

It's definitely worth a read.

An Instant Dystopian Classic

If this book was published before the game it would have been a dystopian classic on the level with Orwell's 1984! Such an amazing read!

To be honest, I LOVE bioshock. This book is a great addition to the game series and the narrator is amazing at the voices and does and amazing job telling the story. I recommend this book to anyone and I'm going to buy it with my money.

Would you kindly...

I must say that I have a bit of a nostalgia-driven personality when it comes to ventures of this particular origin, but putting that aside, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this novel managed to tie-in everything from the original Bioshock videogame. I can only imagine the time and repetition that the author would have needed to get the complete timeline straight just from the audio "snip-its" that exist in the game.

Upon finishing this audiobook, I immediately fired-up (no pun intended) the old PS3 and started playing the entire Bioshock-series again from scratch; instantly understood each character as they popped up in the game and felt a much stronger connection after finishing this audiobook.

Thank you, John Shirley.
