Critic reviews

“No one does fast and furious adventure with snort-out-loud humor better than Shearin. It takes serious skill to walk the line that keeps the danger intense, yet allows Raine’s irreverent humor to shine through, and this perfect blend is what makes the series so massively addictive.” (Romantic Times)

I must re write what I have said of this narrator

I must retract what I have said about this narrator. The more of this story she reads, the better she gets at it. Eileen Stevens has earned my respect as a narrator and story teller. She got used to the writing style and the story .. characters, etc.. She has done a wonderful job, and deserves praise for this series. I am glad they continued to use her for these books.. It's nice to have some consistency, but only when the narrator can adapt to the story, and Eileen Stevens has done a beautiful job of that. I will be listening to this story for a long time to come.

Enjoyable mix of irreverence and seriousness

What did you love best about Bewitched & Betrayed?

It's a great story line that sucks you in immediately. When things get too dark, the main character whips out an irreverent comment that keeps things well balanced.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy how the main character is a person who straddles two worlds. She's basically an honest person who was raised by pirates.

Any additional comments?

I thought the story was very refreshing. One thing that I believe brings down a book is when they only have one character that you like. A strong point of this book is how much you like many of the side characters.

Keeps getting better

As Raine Benares continues to try to rid herself of the evil rock, while balancing the world's best and worst men, the story keeps getting better. Finally breaking her bound with the black wizard and cementing her relationship with the guardian, Raine goes on to battle those who should be able to defeat her. As she stumbles around learning her powers, she defeats her top nemesis and make new and unlikely allies to continue on her search to find and defeat her nemesis once and for all.

Moving Forward and Eight Steps Back

I don't know if it is just me, but I feel like the heroine went from making character progress to becoming worse than when she started. She had made some good choices and then this ... ugh.

Making the Paladin have a more sorted background ... really? While on one hand I think okay, whatever, I feel like the author did this to give him a more bad boy vibe that could compete with his rival. Before this I really didn't care about him all that much as I feel like he was a bit of a wallflower. While the changes weren't horrible, I didn't really buy into them either.

I had a feeling at the end of the last book that this "bond" thing was going to kill the storyline. It went from a fun mystery adventure series to a mildly good romance series.
