Publisher's Summary

Three thousand years after a chunk of iron the size of Khufu’s pyramid collides with Europa, Jupiter’s sixth moon, an asteroid borne of the collision crashes into Earth’s Arctic ice shelf carrying extraterrestrial microbial life. The first man to come into contact with the microbes hears voices—and then dies.

After determining the meteorite originated from Europa, the Global Exploratory Corporation sends oceanographer and biologist Kathy Connelly and her crew to Europa aboard the Surveyor, an experimental spacecraft. They are charged with the task of melting through miles of ice to the hidden ocean beneath, where the search for alien microorganisms begins. But a startling discovery awaits them on the surface of Europa.

Life.

Vast fields of red, plant-like organisms fill the cracks crisscrossing the moon’s surface, surviving on nutrients welling up from the waters below. Intoxicated by thoughts of what might lie beneath, Connelly and her crew activate the Thermal Exploratory System and melt through the ice—toward a world that does not want to be found, toward a force that will do anything to make sure they never leave.

They search for life. They find death.

"Interesting, but I feel like I've heard it before."

So let's start with an ice field, and something extraterrestrial that does not play well with others. It's very John Carpenter.
While this book's flow is ok, it's a little obvious that the author never spoke with anyone regarding contagious diseases. If you like your science fiction based on science fact, then this is not the book for you. If you don't mind some gaping plot-holes, then strap yourself in for a "bumpy" listen.
Overall it's a little easy to predict what is going to happen, but still works for a distraction on my commute.

    "Monsters"

Enjoyed the idea of the story, the frozen landscape is always interesting and the author ensures you enjoy the place. Recommend it for those especially interested in the great white north and the hidden things within. Story line works and the characters are good and fun to follow.

    "A big disappointment"

So many holes in the story it not even funny. And an ending that will make sure I will never buy a story by Jeremy Robinson book again.

    That said, extremely good narrator.

    "Interesting but farfetched"

The book is definitely interesting and fast-paced, and offers an action-packed view of what strange lifeforms might exist on and under Europa's covering of ice. However, the characters' numerous escapes from near-certain death left a lot to be desired in the way of believability. My biggest problem with the book was the narrator's tonal inflections at the end of many sentences. It seemed as if he were just relieved to be done reading the sentence, rather than applying the end-of-sentence inflections that would naturally be used by a character in real life. Numerous times, the inflections were "off" just enough to cause me to spend a lot of time thinking about what the proper inflections should have been, thereby distracting me from the storyline and causing me to miss the content of the next several sentences. In summary, a book probably worth reading if you can suspend disbelief in the harrowing escapes of the protagonists, and accept the fact that the narrator is not of Scott Brick's caliber.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this, it was interesting and fast-paced. The ending was surprising but excellent. Kafer did a fantastic job and really enhances the experience of the story.

    "Sci-fi for the stupid"

Worst 'sci-fi' I've ever read. Science is laughable, plot predictable and the narrative voice is juvenile. Frankly, it's an insult to call this sci-fi at all. Riddled with character cliches and just plain silly. Waste of time.

Yes. The narrator really brings the story to life.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the excitement of the story and how the characteristics of each of the crew member developed.

Which character – as performed by Jeffrey Kafer – was your favourite?

Chu. She is a very determined lady.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Some vegetables can be deadly!
