"It won't make you Skinny or Sexy!"

I have listened to all other Brookmyre's available so i am a fan of his approach to story telling.

Bedlam is definitely classic Brookmyre. It is a cheeky, black-humoured and surprising tale that covers off some interesting observations about 21st century life.

"I persisted for old times sake"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Genuinely not sure who this is aimed at. Sure, long-term admirers like myself will give it the benefit of the doubt because we know Brookmyre has a brilliant voice and tells a great tale. However, I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

He made a decent fist of it but there wasn't a great deal of scope for him to work with.

What character would you cut from Bedlam?

A few more decent characters would have helped.

    Any additional comments?

I'll be back for Brookmyre's next effort. He is always worth listening to.

"Is CB going to give us more of this ?"

Well - I was expecting the usual Brookmyre romp and got this intriguing fantasy SciFi romp instead. And what fun it was too. Brookmyre in hyperspace!
It will be interesting to see which way he goes in his next one. Iain Banks (a lost hero) really excelled at SciFi and I am hoping CB is going to allow his imagination to run wild and become a SciFi author as well.
I thoroughly recommend this to the open reader and nicely read as well!

    "a ok"

this genre is right up my alley, and the story premise is good, but I found this book slow, at times irritating and only being interesting towards the end.
narration was OK. I love Scottish accent and narrator's done an alright job here, but sometimes it felt like he fell into a rut.

"Poor start but gets so much better!"

I've always loved video games and science fiction so this book very much appealed to me from the get go. On listening to the sample the narrators accent also drew me into listening to the book. However, the book, in my opinion, had a very poor beginning. I am not a prude but the amount of foul language during the first few chapters almost made me stop listening altogether. I felt it unnecessary and jarring and that it disrupted my enjoyment of the story. Thankfully, the swearing decreased significantly as the book progressed and I suddenly found myself completely hooked! Despite the narrators best attempts at different American accents (not convinced they are his strong suit) his clarity in reading and fresh voice made listening a very enjoyable experience. I loved the parts of the story when Ross enters new worlds and during his descriptions of the new landscape or atmosphere I found myself attempting to guess the game he was in (was very chuffed when I got a few right).
The twist and ending of the story was very satisfying. I enjoyed the finished but not 'cookie-cutter perfect' ending.
I would indeed recommend this book but if you're not a fan of bad language (or intending it for a younger listener) some parts of the story may not be to your taste.
Enjoy having a full nostalgic and modern gaming geekfest with this story and be prepared to want to live in a video game just a little bit. ;P

    "Awful"
    What disappointed you about Bedlam?

I loved Brookmyre when he started out, Quite Ugly One Morning was refreshingly brilliant. Unfortunately he has got progressively more disappointing, dipping to a new low with this completely boring drivel

What was most disappointing about Christopher Brookmyre’s story?

The characters are people I could not care less about. The humour is non-existent. The twist? I gave up well before it was likely to happen.

What didn’t you like about Angus King’s performance?

I thought the performance was ok but crying out for David Tennant to do it with some panache

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Bedlam?

    Most of them.

    Any additional comments?

Brookmyre has one last chance with me. Please return to former glories!!

"Great book for The British only, Oh yeh."
Would you consider the audio edition of Bedlam to be better than the print version?

I do not read books these days, I only listen, (poor eye sight), so I am unable to make the comparison. However, I found the audio version a hoot and enjoyed it immensly.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ross, Bedlam of course. The way he slowly and methodically worked his way through his dilema and arrived at the final solution. His reaction to various situations and voiced opinions would have made any scotsman proud.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Stiffing it to Ankuu in the final third of the book. Made me feel realy proud that our hero not only was working from the outside but also from the inside. Double payback, oh yeh. How many times you ever would have wanted to do that

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The author definately aimed it at the British audience with all the (in) jokes and references that our international audience would have simply been unable to understand. Being a Brit of course I laughed and groned at the suble and not so subtle very British references. I certainly laghed and cryed at the right times. Poor Bob!!!

    Any additional comments?

For a change no Americanisms that seem to be entering our language. Don't get me wrong I like Americans and their books. It's just nice for a change to have a book aimed just for the British. Well done the author and narrator for a very entertaing book.

"Fun novel - a mix of thriller/sf/gaming nostalgia"

For some reason I have had this book downloaded for ages but only just gotten around to listening. Something had failed to click the 1st time.
On revisiting - brilliant! Well read. Well written. It's an exciting yarn. Would not advise if you have absolutely no experience of video or PC games or get irritated by swearing.
Fairly predicable plot but the narration quality, the wit and occasional mini twist keeps the story an enjoyable listen.
One of those audiobooks where I resented interruptions.

    Any additional comments?

I almost didn't get this title despite a huge Christopher Brookmyre habit. Not knowing a PlayStation from a Wii I wasn't sure I'd be able to follow it. Also I don't really like Sci-fi. But I was quite pleased with myself apart from being a bit lost and confused at the beginning I manage to work out the most of the nuances. I suppose that gamers would be able to jump into the story faster than I did but don't let a lack of gaming knowledge stop you. You'd be missing a thoroughly wonderful listen.

    Story
    "Enjoyable, if derivative."

Clearly this book owes a huge debt to the Matrix and to a bunch of other science fiction books and films. Nevertheless, with it's own particular approach and sense of humour, it's a hugely enjoyable romp.

Brookmyre really has fun playing with the possibilities of a world of real life computer games and with the potential for totally conscious replications of human personalities. There are some real "I have no mouth and I must scream" type moments in here.

Angus King does a solid job of the narration. Very occasionally he seems unsure which character is speaking, but I only noticed this a couple of times.
