"This has everything: suspense, pathos, politics, war, humor, diplomacy, and intergalactic finance." (Publishers Weekly)
"Tight plotting, furious action, and have at 'em entertainment." (Kirkus Reviews)
Battlefield Earth is one of my favorite stories, but I am deleting this audiobook version from my library. There is so much material omitted that it doesn't even hang together, and I don't think a person listening to it for the first time could understand it. For example, Terl completely disappears from the story after the attack on the compounds, when the gas drone was launched. So, how do the earthlings learn how to build a transport device - Terl was the only one who knew how to do that. What about Brown Limper's growing hatred of Johnny, his attempt to kill Johny and his attempt to become ruler of Earth. What about Johhny's friendship with Kurr, the General's treachery, and Patty's tragic love affair with Bitty? How did Johny finally learn Psychlo mathematics? These are all important parts of the whole story and their lack leaves a hollow shell of a tale that does not flow, and leaves far too many lose ends. My advice is to wait for the UNabridged version of the book. It will be well worth the wait and the listen.
This is a well told story and I love McDowell as the reader! However, there is far too much cut out of this telling. So much of the story was lost that I am actually sad that I got this as an audiobook. Go get the actual book and read it. So much better
And I thought the movie was bad. They ruined an excellent book, too much stuff left out. Save your money and wait for an un-abridged version of the book or just read it. In the first few chapters alone you miss much of the story.
No one should by this Abridged version of the book. The ACTUAL book is wonderful, fully fleshed out story and characters. This Audio version is Atrocious! They cut out huge sections of the story that made the book itself so enjoyable and ruined what was left. I did not enjoy this horrible, hacked up version that has been produced here. The editors should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. (PLEASE refund my money!)
I read this book at least 5 times. It is quite entertaining and has never failed to grab my attention. Sure it?s pretty far fetched here and there, but, hellooooooooo, it?s FICTION!!!
I do advice to wait for the unabridged version (abridgments always seem to leave out important story threads so the book doesn?t seem to hang together properly).
It was a pretty entertaining and easily comprehensible read.
The Psychlos were quite good characters. The hero Johnny was pretty one-dimensional
I thought he was magnificent. A fantastically graphic and versatile actor
I was a bit surprised it was in the Modern Library top 100 because it is an easy listen, but pure Pulp really
If you want to listen to this book, get the unabridged edition. The abridged edition leaves out of things that make this book enjoyable.
I love this book, but... I am very sorry it is abridged. As some important parts were left out, sometimes it is difficult to follow or understand the action line in this audiobook. The narration would be nice if was not too fast. Some places it seems to be a quicky. In spite of these - having read the book not once - I have enjoyed the audiobook. Thank you.
Little Guy , Get The Big Guy
The Ending and tying it in with the future
More like (Avatar)
Audible- took so much away being (ABRIDGED) I paid for the book we should get the hole book
So much of this book is cut out of this abridged version that its a completly different tale. A very pale shadow of of the written version.
I'll compare this book to 'Old Mans War', partly due the vast number of aliens races and the high level of description of each, but mostly due to the fact that if you enjoyed that book you'll probably enjoy this one. But really 'Battlefield Earth' is in a league of its own. Just as one couldnt compare 'Starship Troopers' or 'Enders Game' to another, this book cant be compared to another.
If you read the paper copy of this book, its a nice memory jogger. That was nice. If you havent, dont purchase this audio book. its a thin and incomplete product.
This book has nothing to do with any wack-ball religion by the way.
"Too abridged for my liking"
Roddy MCdowell does an excellent job of narrating Battlefield Earth. Unfortunately whoever did the abridging was not so clever. Large sections of the original story have been left out, materially altering the plot and sense of the book. This is a great shame as the original story is one of the best Sci Fi adventures ever written. I have read all 1000+ pages 3 times so feel that I can speak with some authority on this. Had the original book been preserved intact I would happily give it 5 stars. In this hacked state I can only give it 2.
"Dismal version, abridged to death"
Only half of the book was included, losing all the political aspects and the build up against the Tolneps.
The story is great, if read yourself. But this is a dismal hatchet job.
"Too abridged and ignore the film!"
I must agree, without reservation, to the two previous reviews.
Having read the book several times did help to fill in the missing chapters, and whole chapters were omitted in this abridged version.
However, if you enjoy scifi and man against all the odds scenarios, this is a must read.
Forget about the film. I first read this book in my early 20's and Roddy McDowels narrations put you there with the charactors and time.
An absolute classic listen.
