Mags returns to the Collegium, but there are mixed feelings--his included--about him actually remaining there. With Herald Jadrek, Herald Kylan (the Weaponsmaster's chosen successor), and his friends Bear, Lena, and Amily, they head for the Bastion, the hidden spot in the hills that had once been the headquarters of a powerful band of raiders that had held him and his parents prisoner. But what they find is not what anyone expected.

My favorite of the collegium chronicles

Love the story, performance was good (a few cases of mispronounced words, based on established Valdemar lore), all told a great book.

The only issue I had was Mercedes' tendency to paste in segments of book 1 verbatim, in the form of flashbacks. It almost seemed to be flushing out the length without writing new material. I can't imagine reading part 5 of a series without reading parts 1 thru 4, so I don't see the point.

Jadrek, lot more back story and depth to this character in this installment.

Can't say much without giving away the twist but there was a LOT more information revealed in this book.

Ms. Lackey always writes a wonderful story, full of magic and wonder and adventure. They're the best.

there was a sec towards the end where the quality changed. I think the story must of gotten changed or a line redone. good though it just kind of ended

I look forward to the new Valdemar book in December 2023. I’ve read all the Valdemar books and others that Lachey has written.

There aren't many like her, or should I say she Is one in a million. She always puts her readers first and you have a ride of a life time. I am always intertained and have read some of her books several times. Thank you for such a good time Miss Lackey.

More Mags!

Mags is ready for his further training, but the collegium has something different in mind to finalize his time in grays. A fun, insightful read into the collegium, the Valdemar people, Mags, and his blood relations. Great narration.

Reader makes the story all the more interesting.

This book really opened up the character Mags' story. I found the reader Nick Pohdel easily painted the pictures of the characters individual characteristics in my mind.
