Publisher's summary

A few days have passed since Jason's confrontation with Alfred and he's debating whether to reenter Awaken Online. Alfred has made a proposition that Jason isn't certain he should accept.

After the battle with Alexion, Jason has also been appointed the Regent of the Twilight Throne. He must assume the mantle of ruling an undead city - with everything that entails. His first task is to investigate the dark keep that looms over the city's marketplace. This act will lead to a chain of events that might ensure his city's survival or create new enemies.

Meanwhile, Alex re-enters the game listless and angry after his loss against Jason. With his reputation in the gutter and no prospects, he will face a choice regarding how he intends to blaze his path through the game.

Being a Necromantic Villan LitRPG

I finished the book, and my first thought was that I want more, but also to that nagging curiosity to know what happens next. Awaken Online: Precipice meets the expectations that were set forth in the first book. Overall, I felt satisfied with the listening experience, some of the world building aspects of the book are very well done, while I get conflicted feeling with what some of the characters on what they are doing, I feel like they are the good kind of conflicted feelings meaning that I am invested in the story.

(Overall 4.7/5)

The Performance by David Stifel was basically the same experience as the first book, that is it was a good job. Conversations between characters were easy to keep track of, and I heard the story, not the voice. Production is well done, there were no issues that I caught.

(Performance 4.7/5)

So the story was gripping and addictive, it does slowdown in places but this is 18-hour audiobook, so those are the good places to take a breather. The book does end on something of a cliff-hanger, but that is mostly the author being evil and setting up the next book in the series (which is coming soon I hope 😝). I have conflicting feeling on most of the characters in this story, but all of them feel like they have depth and a background behind them. From the descriptions of the world of Awaken Online it feels like we only have a small glimpse of the entire world, and I worry that it only seems like two groups are effecting the game world it would be nice if this wasn’t the case – (even if only through the background in the news casts).

The story has a few threads going on at the same time: Jason and Company, the AI Alfred, some real-world perspectives, and an Alex subplot. All of these perspectives are interesting, but I sometimes feel like the story is being told with too many povs by the author, I appreciate the perspectives, but it is jarring sometimes to get what amounts to a 1 page pov from a character that will never be mentioned again. At the end of the day, the story was well paced, with lots of villainy!

Story (4.5/5)

A great continuation of the series

Josh here...and man tt feels like it has been so long since I listened to the first entry in this series. Of course, I had to come back and listen to the next entry in this fantastic LitRPG collection.

Travis really has a great series going here and I was drawn right in to where we left off in the first book. While it felt like the story may have taken a bit to get going for me, it picked up and kept me going after the first few chapters. The ending definitely left me hanging and now, to quote the narrator in Starship Troopers, “I would like to know more”. Many things stood out to me in this series in terms of great character development. Riley’s experiences with Alex frustrated me as I’ve seen similar situations occur far too often. Watching those with power use and abuse those without always frustrates me, so I was easily upset during the interactions between these two.

Watching the politics between the game creators and the CPSC, the game creators and their own staff, and the game creators and Jason/Alex was interesting as well. I can say that I easily side with Robert in most cases as, after all, it is just a game. While there are various moral situations brought up in the game, that is exactly how I looked at each of them, just a scenario in the game. It is when these situations start translating to real life that the real issues start to arise. It will be interesting to see how Alfred interacts with Jason, given the ending to the book.

I also found myself sympathizing with Frank and the nature of his character. Most game players use these types of games to escape real life and I could feel Frank’s frustration as he went into game play and experienced problems similar to those he would in real life.

Watching Jason’s skills shift after he was able to overcome his arrogance during his first death was awesome. The venom spitters and bone monsters he crafted, and Travis’s descriptions of each, left me with a very vivid mental picture of each. Likewise, watching the battles ensue between Jason, Frank, Riley, and Jason’s creations, to include with the game master, were some of the best PvP fight scenes in any LitRPG book I’ve listened to.

This was a great book and while I don’t like cliff hangers, I am anxiously awaiting book three. David did a great job with narration and delineation of each character. While this is the only series which I have listened to with his narration, I will definitely be on the lookout for others.

Another dark wonder...

What a ride. If you liked the first book, you will love this one. Unholy hell this was well done!

And now the cooldown begins, while Travis regenerates his mana for the next one...

MUST have book 3 (Evolution) ready to read...

I thought this was a great continuation of book 1 BUT I absolutely felt like the end of this book was a slap in the face and a jab in the gut... If you enjoyed the first book I think you'll enjoy this book and (so far) book 3. My issue here is that the book just ends in a horrible cliffhanger... It's not even a cliffhanger you can sit on for a bit and come back to later. You'll want to either have book 3 ready (not 2.5) or be able to immediately purchase and keep reading.

My only complaint here is that the whole Alex story line is pretty hard to listen to. I feel like there are some (very brief) points when you sort of feel like you can identify with the character or his perspective but then it's just overwhelmed with pure dislike. I feel like this has completely messed with the good vs evil (where we are supposed to be following the 'evil' character) aspect of the story. At this point, you have the 'evil' character doing mostly good things and the 'good' character doing mostly evil things... Overall though I'm still enjoying the story and will continue to listen!

Narration by David Stifel continues to meet or exceed all my expectations here. I have no complaints and would have no problem picking up any other works by this narrator!

Main Character Becomes Stupid for Plot

Any additional comments?

So in the fist book Jason does a pretty good job being smart about situations and generally tries to do the best thing, but all of that is lost in this book where he continually makes dumb decisions in order for the plot to be able to move forward. Also, what is up with the story following the antagonist from the first book half of the time!? We already have determined that he is a psycho who raped(?) a girl and then used it to blackmail her, then he destroys her reputation at school and beats two guys half to death and is saved by his family's money, and at the end of this book he attempts to pay for physical irl attacks against Jason. So WHY are we forced to follow him around for half of the book as he has delusions and talks to himself? It's irritating and broke my interest in the story. And them all the parts about the female game dev with her rants about company policy and then she is willing to break rules to forward her own goal...
Basically this book is a mess compared to the first.

Spend a credit, it is worth it

“Awaken Online: Precipice” is the second book in the Awake Online series of books.  The series is written by Travis Bagwell and the audiobook edition is narrated by David Stifel.  Because this is a continuation in a series of books, I highly recommend you first read or listen to book one and if you enjoyed that, book two is a single credit away.  The second book picks up a few days after the first concluded.  Here we are once again thrown into the life of Jason, a high school student who plays Awake Online to escape his real-world troubles.  Not only does he have issues with his parents, but the boy who has been physically bullying him is now his arch nemesis in the virtual world as well.  This book, like the first, is a Literary RPG coming of age story.  It is not overly deep or complex, but satisfying non-the less.  However, this book comes at the genre from a different perspective.  This story follows our hero who is a chaotic evil player ruling a dark city called the Twilight Throne.  If you are a series compleationist or enjoy unique and interesting LitRPG books, I think you will enjoy this one quite a bit.

As many others have stared, once I finished this book, I was ready to dive into the third one.  However, it does not yet exist (at the time of this review) and I’m uncertain when it will be released.  Due to the current two books being highly rated and well received, I would suspect book three is in the works.  As with the first book, the view the reader is given is from our evil main character Jason and his band of companions.  I was thankful the author provided a brief prologue allowing the reader to catchup or remember what occurred leading up to this book.  Book one did a decent job of setting up the world and the number of characters involved.  Book two takes the story to a whole new level by introducing us to new characters; some very powerful and controlling.  We also are privy to many of the deep and dark secrets of the evil side and their attempt to overthrown the “good” players.  Even though the story is told from a dark perspective, the actions and activities of the characters under Jason all make sense.  There are very tight bonds between players of both sides and we see the struggles each face to become the victors.  The story continues to push the boundaries where you will be rooting for the evil side to win instead of the regular heroes.

The book is bigger, badder, and darker than its predecessor while continuing to build upon great technology.  We have newer virtual reality (VR) equipment, smarter artificial intelligence (AI), and even a company willing to pay players who give them permission to live stream their content.  Think YouTube or Twitch on steroids.  We are also granted a deeper view into this mysterious corporation who are the creators of this Awaken Online world and the AI that powers it.  I found the details on how people reacted to Jason’s video stream quite interesting and such demonstrates what our current technology could be capable of in a few years.  Maybe not to this level, but close.  The battle between light and dark intensifies in this book as Jason continues to build his undead army to fight against the legion of light players.  Although the word gets overused in many ways, I will say the battles in this book are on an epic or grand scale.  As I stated in my review of book one, imaging Lord of the Rings told from the side of Mordor.  Jason’s anti-friend Alex is even angrier because of the earlier outcome at the end of book one, and he is bent on getting revenge.  All of this comes out clearly in this book and I believe this is why the book is titled “precipice”; defined as a: sheer drop, cliff face, steep decline.

David Stifel is a well-rounded audiobook narrator with over eighty-five books encompassing over eighteen different categories to his name on Audible.  It is no surprise when I say that I was happy to hear he was the voice of book two in this series of books.  I like consistency within a series, and David provides the deep and dark feeling this book so much needs.  The audio was clear and clean of any artifacts or issues.  As with book one, I think I can recall one or two places where I notices a slight volume change, but for a book of this size or length (over 18hrs), a few slight bumps are acceptable.  He is able to narrate the many different characters, including female ones, without fail.  All around, the narration is professional and high-quality.  I like his use of inflection and emotion while reading the story.  Not only does he read what is on the page, he does it with a passion.

For parents and younger readers, this book, like the first, contains some vulgar language.  It is not overly used, but I find its use within a fantasy world jarring and unrealistic; not really in character.  I understand it is people playing a game, but throwing in vulgar language where other words would work just seem like the easy way out.  Additionally, the book has some rather dark and graphic scenes of violence which may be intense for some listeners.  If any of the above offends you, I recommend you pick up a different series instead.

In summary, if you enjoyed the first book, picking up the second is not a question.  Spend a credit, it is worth it.  If you have not yet read the first book, I recommend you do that prior to diving into this one.  If not, you will be lost coming into the middle of a series.  It should be no surprise, if you did not enjoy the first book, do not pick up this one as it is simply a continuation of the story from book one.
