Publisher's Summary

The Earth died when aliens rained thermonuclear warheads on her cities and sprayed the surface with a bio-terminator. A deadly poison drifted to every corner of the planet, threatening the last survivors with annihilation.

For a soldier in Antarctica like Creed, there is only one way to keep breathing untainted air. He must bury his hatred of the extraterrestrials and join the Jelk Corporation as an assault trooper, leaving the planet for outer space. In return for his and other people's services, the corporation will house the last humans for as long as the assault troopers keep winning.

For the price of living and the chance to save humanity, Creed has to wear a shock chip in his neck - Jelk discipline is harsh - and he has to don a symbiotic battlesuit that feeds off his sweat. Human life is cheap in the vast alien war. The assault troopers are little more than suicide soldiers, but for humanity to escape extinction, they must survive. But Creed didn't agree to the bargain in order to remain a dog to the aliens. He has a plan, and he'll need all his cunning to beat these star born bastards and begin the road to freedom for the human race.

Assault Troopers is a tale of human extinction and ultimate desperation, written by bestselling author Vaughn Heppner.

"Payback is a Bitch You Lumpy Midget!"
Where does Assault Troopers rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Ranks in the high middle zone. How about 14.25 out of 20?

What other book might you compare Assault Troopers to and why?

I will compare this book to The Battle of Heligoland Bight by Eric W. Osborne. They are totally different and have absolutely nothing in common except that they both concern humans and how they act in adverse situations. As I have said previously - Stupid question Audible!

What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Christian Rummel gives an edge to the main character that works well. Also, I dig his female character voices. When I heard Jennifer's voice I had a flashback and thought I was in Dauntless' bridge in Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series. Rummel is a pro. He made a pretty good story into a solid good story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions. I did get saddened when the main character and Jennifer, fresh out of the sweaty sack, travel into a German city. Buy book for more info. I laughed at least 9 times toward the end when one of the central characters opts out of the evil camp and fights the good fight. Solid dialogue.

    Any additional comments?

Give this book a shot. Picks up nicely in the latter chapters.

    Story
"Angry, Poor action, No reality, A lot of Yelling"

One of my favorite genres is military scifi and I am constantly looking for stuff I haven't read before. I came across this story and I liked the plot summary that was described, and never having read the author before, I read the reviews, and seeing most were positive I got the book. How disappointed I was in this story. The action mainly consists of a lot of yelling, a lot of shooting or stabbing, and very little realistic descriptions of the battles. The main character is boorish, always angry and has no leadership skills what-so-ever other than to constantly yell ATTACK. He shows no intelligence, never has a plan that is fully explained, treats everyone around him terribly and is totally undeveloped as a character. And that is really the most disappointing aspect of this whole story, not one character is developed or allowed to grow. There are so many opportunities for witty dialogue, developing relationships, and intrigue that are simply bypassed. The characters that are presented are 2 dimensional and totally wasted because they are simply introduced and dropped, make cameo appearances later and are dropped again. The premise of the story is very good but ultimately fails due to a total lack of character development and adequate universe development. If you like this kind of story, the underdog vs everyone else story, I suggest looking elsewhere, such as the Troy Rising series and Legacy of the Aldenata series by John Ringo, or the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. You will enjoy them much more.

    "Clearly I'm Not Macho Enough"

About 25% into the Audible Narration, I began to feel that the song, "America, f$ck yeah!" was written as a spoof of this book. Super macho, lone wolf, bad a$$, bullet proof, survivor battles aliens in the face of defeat - and takes names while chewing bubble gum. It was so over the top, I felt hair growing on my chest - and I'm a woman. But at the same time, it also elicited grunts of disgust interspersed with giggles at the silliness. If there is an antithesis to a bodice ripper, this is it. What Johanna Lindsey does for women's fiction, Vaughn Heppner exuberantly does for men's fiction. Can you enjoy either if you are the opposite gender? oh sure. Will you enjoy it? That's another question.

Story: Creed (because one word names with double meanings are much more macho) survived a decimating alien attack on the Earth by virtue of being in the arctic babysitting some scientists. When he stumbles upon an alien ship, he decides to save the Earth by jumping on board and nearly single handedly killing anything that moves. Because, hey, NO ONE destroys America (oh yeah, and the world), and lives!! Throw in a bunch of stereotypes (even a sexy Russian-accented rocket scientist super model with 'great t*ts') and you get the idea of what happens next. Carnage ensues.

I'm sure many would argue not to take it so seriously and just enjoy the ride. For me, I'd happily do so if the writing wasn't so annoying. Unrealistic stereotypes of macho manliness and objectified women aside, the very first bit of the story started to annoy. E.g., we get a rambling prologue where the narrator finally ends by saying he'll start at the the day he met his first alien. But when the next chapter starts, he starts rambling about his WHOLE HISTORY forever until FINALLY we get to meeting the alien. Seriously - editing anyone? By the time we get on the alien ship and meet the rocket scientist super model, all he notices is her abundant chest area. In detail. Because, hey, a girl with a great rack is ALWAYS going to be more interesting than worrying about dying from the aliens after him. I figured right then that if the author isn't going to take the story seriously, then neither would I. And so it was time to find something else to read.

I'd tried the Fenris series with no luck either - so I'm guess I lack the sense of humor or y-Chromosome needed for these books. I'm sure there are a lot of readers screaming, BOO YEAH!!! and pumping fists in the air while reading this book. Me, I was thinking that a South Park version of this story with Stan and Eric shooting up the ship might have been more realistic (and more fun). The phallic ships on the kindle version should have given me pause before purchasing, I guess, since they are indicative of what's inside.

I listened to the Audible version and the narrator did a decent job (with what he had - not one snicker in there).

"Good Story over all a fair to good book. 3.5*"

This must be the first part of a new saga. The story in ok and has action with drama. It could have been better but well worth the listen. I'll be waiting for part 2.

    "A good light read"

An OK book made much better by the always talented narration of Christian Rummel.
This oft used plot of humanity, captured or recruited, by villainous aliens to be used as mercenaries is further enforced by holding the balance of mankind hostage to extinction.

This light read (or listen) is only slightly marred by the over the top, self-aggrandizing, oh so smugly superior alien villains. A writing style that creates antagonists that bring to mind those found in L Ron Hubbard’s Mission Earth series. As part of the plot line some of this fits in but too much tends to detract from the story.

If you’re looking for a light read or listen this one fills the bill.

    "pretty good"

The main character is a little too stupid for my taste at times; which also explains why he keep thinking up a conspiracy theory including aliens and angels and stuff..

other than that, the storyline is fun, the narrator great!
the science explaining is a little scarse, as the main character probably would not understand most of the concepts anyways :)

    "Worst I've heard."

The story was trite. The technical details...weren't. No science. Characters weren't developed, at all. And this guy doesn't understand anything about military matters. First, last and only time I read this mediocre author.

"Great Story, Alien Races a Bit Cartoonish"

Loved everything about the whole series except the alien races described mostly reminded me of the stuff you'd see on an old 60s episode of Star Trek. I wouldn't equate highly evolved beings with dirty babion type creatures or giant bipedal tigers.

This was a very enjoyable book. There were some holes / jumps in the storyline but overall it was good. This could shape into a very good series.
