Publisher's summary

It’s been almost a year since October "Toby" Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day’s sleep. She’s tried to focus on her responsibilities - training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester’s knight, and paying the bills - but she can’t help feeling like her world is crumbling around her, and her increasingly reckless behavior is beginning to worry even her staunchest supporters.

To make matters worse, Toby’s just been asked to find another missing child…only this time it’s the changeling daughter of her fellow knight, Etienne, who didn’t even know he was a father until the girl went missing. Her name is Chelsea. She’s a teleporter, like her father. She’s also the kind of changeling the old stories warn about, the ones with all the strength and none of the control. She’s opening doors that were never meant to be opened, releasing dangers that were sealed away centuries before - and there’s a good chance she could destroy Faerie if she isn’t stopped.

Now Toby must find Chelsea before time runs out, racing against an unknown deadline and through unknown worlds as she and her allies try to avert disaster. But danger is also stirring in the Court of Cats, and Tybalt may need Toby’s help with the biggest challenge he’s ever faced.

Toby thought the last year was bad. She has no idea...

Critic reviews

"Toby’s unusual heritage and her uneasy relationships with her mother’s family will remind readers of Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, and Thompson fans will appreciate Toby’s tough and self-reliant character…a must for fans of genre-bending blends of crime and fantasy." ( Booklist)

Daye after Daye

Apparently I'm the only person who is going to give this book a bad review which kills me because I adore this series, I loved the story what little there was of it ,I felt it was drowned out by the constant references to the other books and repeated content ,even our amazing heroin is hurt the same way twice. It wont stop me from reading these books ever. I love them I just hope this is just a bad one, everyone entitled to one bad one even the great Seanan McGuire.

This story has really hit it's stride.

The characterization depth and storyline quality has now been first rate for the last two novels.

A very enjoyable tale -

A world worth visiting

Seanan McGuire has created an entire world, and welcomed us to visit. Honestly, I don't want to ever leave. Every book so far in the October Daye series has been packed with raw emotion, pain, suspense, magic and complicated relations. They each would probably work as individual stories, but listening to them in order is showing the characters growth beautifully. The narrator is doing an amazing job letting us hear, not just the words, but the emotions of the speakers, and her voice helps bring these stories to life. Oak and ash, I'll defkately continue with the series, and recommend this book to all fans of fantasy, and even those who enjoy a mere mortal crime story - this series satisfies both groups, I'm sure.

One of the best things about this series, is the narrator, Mary Robinette Kowal. She bring the whole series to life. And Senan McGuire, I love your writing. Another awesome October Day book!

I loved this!

Seanan McGuire has created a unique world of magic and evocative paranormal characters of many different kinds, all plausible within the world and many of them likeable. There's enough vivid description so you can enter this magical world with all its sounds, sights, and especially scents, and absolutely be in it for a time. There's plenty of action that doesn't devolve into a wallow in senseless gore, and there's friendship and love that doesn't descend to levels of smut. I'm really happy with our hero----brave, coffee-loving, resourceful little October.

I am so glad that this series has been offered on Audible. The publisher has offered it in mass market paperback, with the typical font that's hard on your eyes, and MP3 CD, which is a format that many people lack the equipment to play, and lacks any way to mark your place or to fast-forward back to the place where you left off. What were they thinking? This is too good a series and too much fun to restrict it to these two choices, poor ones in my opinion. In Audible we can all get the book in a form compatible with the equipment we have.

If you love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, you'll feel the same about Seanan McGuire's October Daye series. I'm choosing another in the series right now, and I can't wait for another imaginative and humorous romp!

The Plot Thickens! :)

An interesting new twist in the Toby Daye saga. This was a highly enjoyable listen. A wonderful story with an equally wonderful narrator! I definitely recommend this series!

The books continue to get better!!!

My personal rating: PG (for violence, mainly and rare language usage)
My favorite character in this book:Etienne, I guess... We definitely get to know him better

Mary Robinette Kowal's narration style takes some adjusting to, but she definitely grows on you, and this book is where I quit noticing the narration and just enjoyed the book in its entirety. The plot is quite ingenious, and the characters are becoming old friends to my ears. I love this series now (though I wasn't sure at first), and if you've read my other reviews of this series, you may know that I was dubious at first.

I am no longer dubious. I will go on to try almost anything this author writes in future, as I enjoy the rich environment, the characters and the intricate plotlines. Seanan McGuire has me hooked! (And I may even be hooked by Mary Robinette Kowal someday as well)

Wonderful take on the far universe!

My favorite stories

This book series got me through a really difficult time in my life, and now I’m reading again with the Audible versions. I love Mary Robinette’s narration and I honestly get twitchy if I don’t get to listen to her for a day or two!
