Area 51: the Mission

Hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest is a place shrouded in mystery. It is called The Mission. And in nearby villages people are screaming in pain as they die from a virus more deadly than Ebola. They can't escape it. They can't cure it. They can't stop it from exploding into a worldwide epidemic poised to kill us all.... Scientist Lisa Duncan and Special Forces Officer Mike Turcotte suspect this new "Black Death" is actually a biological weapon in an escalating war between us...and "them".

Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Bob Mayer writing as Robert Doherty: Now we know what the government hid there. It's time we found out why....

Them? The aliens who are part of a chilling conspiracy connected to ancient riddles, a covert government agency...and Area 51. Now from the Great Wall of China to a top-secret facility beneath Antarctica's ice cap, an eclectic group of soldiers and scholars are working with Duncan and Turcotte to give humankind one last shimmering hope to survive. To stop the aliens - at least until the Pandora's box of Area 51 opens up again....

What the Critics Say

"This third volume in Doherty's ongoing chronicle of human-alien clandestine warfare should appeal to fans of UFOs, conspiracy theories, and 'ancient astronauts'." (Library Journal)

"Getting better with both narration and suspense"

The author has improved the tightness of the story and improved the writing style.
I can't believe am listening to the 3rd book. Its actually good.

Narration has improved, although not upto standards set by Ray Porter.
Sometimes find it difficult to differentiate characters since same type of narration and accent is used.

The story is now complex and contains more depth.

    Well done.

    "Are we done, yet?"

This series, which began with such promise in Area 51, has become rather long in the alien's tooth. This is mindless fiction, of course, but the story is difficult to follow, and then you realize, why bother? The various good and bad aliens and their earth bound allies and clones have just become tedious.

    "I want my credit back!"

    I'm just tired!!!!

In retrospect if I knew how bad it will get, I would've never bought the first book.
The original story was good but it dragged out for much longer than it had a right to.
Book 3 is finished and we are still nowhere.

    "What a Stinker!"
What would have made Area 51: the Mission better?

An improvement would have been a better writer. His use of acronyms were irritating at first, then in places, just so frequent that they took away from the story. I found myself losing the point of the story trying to follow the confusing alphabetic jumbles.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Never again one of these novels.

What didn’t you like about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance?

HATED IT! He sounded like a cross between a bad news announcer and a Rod Sterling wannabe. He has no emotion at all in his delivery of dialogue and he sounds as if reading a line at a time across a script page instead of reading the sentence, any sentence.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Area 51: the Mission?

    The entire book.

    Any additional comments?

I will NEVER listen to a book again by this narrator. And the author is questionable in my list of bad 'Riter's'

"Maybe this wasn't my cup of tea"

Which is surprising because I really like Sci Fi. I found this book to be rather boring and tedious. There were a few scenes that got my attention but mainly it was just droning on and on.

    "Very Good"

I have enjoyed this series a lot so far, it has a good mix of action and Sci/fi which anyone who likes this genre should enjoy. I think the narrator has done a very good job bringing the different characters to life in the stories.

    "Completing The Series"
What did you love best about Area 51: the Mission?

The depth of detail correlates to the wonders of the world in such a manor as to enhance the story and make us believe it actually could be true facts and all the more make the series relavant. I am impressed.
