Toby is a young tom who dreams of becoming an apprentice cat, a feline partnered with an apprentice human mage, at the King's Academy of Mages. When he is partnered with Lorn Ribaldy, the nephew of known traitor Master Hecktor Ribaldy, he learns his dreams are in jeopardy. There are those who want to keep undesirables out, and that includes Lorn and anyone associated with him.
In a meeting with Head Master Cat Meredith and Head Master Mage Jalen, Toby and Lorn are offered a way to change their status from provisional to permanent: find out why Toby's father disappeared during a standard recon mission for the High Council. Now all they have to do is keep up with their homework and survive a little espionage.

Summary: Toby’s only mediocre at magic, but he still wants to fulfill his mother’s dream of being accepted into the Academy. Once in, he stumbled across a colossal mystery.
Random Comments:
- It’s an intriguing world where humans and cats work hand-in-hand. The description of it being a kingdom and them traveling in carriages sort of make me think it’s a steampunk type era. It’s a tad hard to tell though.
- The characters are well-developed.
- The narration is nicely handled. I personally didn’t enjoy the voice used for Terrence as that was a little tough to follow, but the characters are distinct.
- The mystery meanders a bit, but things work out in the end.
- It finds the balance between giving the reader closure and leaving enough loose ends to gracefully beg for a sequel.
Conclusion: Slow start and lots of world-building, but overall, a satisfying tale.

4.5/5 Cute Cat Goes to Magic School Type Story

One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the way that Ripple built the world. She never spent too much time explaining the way things were through narrative. It was almost all through dialogue. She made everything fit together well, and the world just seemed right.
The other thing I really liked was how easy it was to relate to the characters. They felt real, and I am now very attached to them.
I highly recommend this book! I couldn't put it down! Also superb job on the narration!
Great Young Adult Book! Can't wait for Book 2!
