Publisher's summary

Now a STARZ® Original Series produced by FremantleMedia North America starring Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, and Pablo Schreiber.

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday's bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies . . . and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

"Mystery, satire, sex, horror, poetic prose—American Gods uses all these to keep the reader turning the pages."—Washington Post

Critic reviews

"This full-cast performance of the tenth anniversary edition of Neil Gaiman's American Gods (think director's cut) is one of the most mesmerizing audio experiences ever.... Ron McLarty plays a randy, crusty old Odin disguised as a white-collar con man to perfection. Daniel Oreskes's Shadow, the hero who doesn't know quite what he is, is masterful. Oliver Wyman, who did Mad Sweeney the Leprechaun, is a genius. Hats in the air for the whole cast, a flawless production, and a tour de force of a tale." ( AudioFile)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

Good Storytelling

I have been putting off reading this book for a long time. Now that I've read it I'm so glad that I did. The characters and world created by Neil Gaiman are detailed and inviting. I found myself wishing to stay a little longer with Shadow and some of the others. On the other hand, at times the story moved at a glacial speed and the final "battle" scene was somewhat anticlimactic. Over all I recommend this book with the warning that if it feels like it is dragging hang on because something good is always coming.

Such a great story and performance. I am excited to watch the series and see how they played it out in live action.

The feeling of a late night drive and the flow of thoughts that follow it.

I enjoyed American Gods! It inspired a sense of wanderlust and clarity that comes with road-tripping across a country or state with no plan. The overall plot was not as important as the twist and turns that bend with this mountain of mythos. I had a great time trying to use previous knowledge of mythology to uncover character identities before they were revealed. All in all a peculiar experience that allowed me to reflect on deep symbolism and attach my own perspectives.

narration

The book was best when read directly from the author. His voice perfect but it had been a couple years since I last listened to the book. They changed the book to this full production version and now I can't get the original version back.

all the Gods

amazing narrative that combines the diverse view of Gods and how human imagery portrays their influence.

The production was excellent!

The characters were neat and I liked where it was going, but it never got there. I love mythology and really just wanted more from this. Shadow never really made any changes as a character. I don't know how to describe my disappointment but I would still recommend listening to the audiobook of it if you have the spare time. I was crazy about his book nevermore so I had high hopes for this.
