Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

In a time when the Industrial Revolution has escalated into all-out warfare, Mad Science rules the world… with mixed success.

With the help of Krosp, Emperor of All Cats, Agatha has escaped from the massive airship known as Castle Wulfenbach. After crashing their escape dirigible, Agatha and Krosp fall in with Master Payne’s Circus of Adventure, a traveling troupe of performers dedicated to staging Heterodyne shows - dramatizations of the exploits of Bill and Barry Heterodyne and their allies - who are unaware of Agatha’s connection to the Heterodyne line.

Pursued by the ruthless Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, his handsome son Gil, and their minions (not to mention Othar Tryggvassen, Gentleman Adventurer), Agatha hides in plain sight among the circus folk, servicing their clanks and proving herself adept in performing the role of Lucrezia Mongfish, nemesis to - and later wife of - Bill Heterodyne. She also begins training under Zeetha, swordmistress and princess of the lost city of Skifander. Together, Agatha, Krosp, and the performers travel across the treacherous Wasteland of war-torn Europa, toward Mechanicsburg, and the ancestral home of the Heterodynes - Castle Heterodyne.

But with many perils standing in her way - including Wulfenbach’s crack troops, mysterious Geisterdamen, savage Jägermonsters, and the fabled Storm King - it’s going to take more than a spark of Mad Science for Agatha to get through.…

From Phil and Kaja Foglio, creators of the multiple WCCA and Hugo Award-winning webcomic Girl Genius, comes Agatha H and the Clockwork Princess, a gaslamp fantasy filled to bursting with Adventure! Romance! And Mad Science!

    "Read before seeing the comic"
What made the experience of listening to Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed it more than the comic because I was able to visualize the characters for myself. The comic depiction of the characters was different that the picture I had created in my mind.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I enjoyed Claus, because he is strong, but confused. He is controlling, controlled, and completely oblivious and I enjoyed that.

I had heard the authors interviewed and knew about the comic, before I tried this novel. I totally loved it so much more than the comic with the performance and the voices. The audio version is fabulous!

    "A good fun story!"

It's a good story in a steam punk universe, the characters are entertaining, it's not predictable, and the preformance is pretty good.

I listen to audiobooks to keep me productive while I work and this one served that purpose.

    "Steampunk at it's best!"

Loved it! Left me wanting the next book now. The Foglio's smashed this one out of the park. The reader was spot on! I am impressed!

"Great story, terrible app, never using it again"
What would have made Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess better?

Actually being able to download it to one of my devices after purchase would have been stellar.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The vocal fry and flat affect were both very distracting in the tiny bit of my purchase I actually got to listen to, but both are typical of Audio.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story is great but I only know this from the Kindle edition. It refused to download on any of my devices - $18 well wasted.

    Any additional comments?

Just to reiterate, Audio sucks and I'm not using it again without some serious improvements.

    "Great Book...but not the Comic."

I love Girl Genius, and the audio books are very fun. I can't help feeling, though, that they're bland. Girl Genius is about over the top, crazy as cats mad scientists and monsters. It uses Dramatic Fonts and many Exclamation Points. The audio books take a more... normal tone. Voices are not raised. No one cackles. No harmonics send chills down your spine.

The narrator is good, but it feels like she's reading from something with dots, not bangs, and no italics or bold. It doesn't ruin things, it just tones them down, a lot.

"One of the best Audible books ever"
What did you love best about Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess?

The people (and creatures) all have realistic motivation and responses, no matter how fantastic the situation. And humor can be surprising and immensely enjoyable! The true complexity of the plot begins to reveal itself. What a great book, characters and the reader is absolutely fantastic.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I dont know about tag lines, but i would love to see this done with real actors (and of course great CGI)

    Any additional comments?

The start of the first book in the series was a little clumsy, but the rest of the book was great. The volume continues the improvment, to be one of the best audiobooks i have listened to on Audible, and i have listened to a broad variety. There is a wide variety of characters, Angela Dawe makes following the changes easy. A great story, great writing, and a great delivery. NOTE: you can start this book without reading the first, but i think you should probably start with the first. I havent quite finished this book but I already ordered the 3rd book. Great series.

    "Mad science+Laughter+Romance equals awesomeness!"
Would you listen to Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess again? Why?

Yes, the narrator Angela Dawe does an amazing job. There are so many characters in this book and yet every one has a distinct voice and feel to them that doesn't feel forced in any way. Just love this narrator's performance. But the book itself is also great. There's adventure and science all mixed with much laughter. It makes my commute to work something I look forward to.

What other book might you compare Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess to and why?

I don't really know. I can only really compare it to the first book I guess.

Which character – as performed by Angela Dawe – was your favorite?

I love them all but I really love the way she voices the jagermonsters. Makes me laugh all the time. The combination of beast, humour, perviness is just great and her accent just brings it to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughter all the way. It's not often I laugh out loud to books but I definitely did with this one. It takes the mad science and mixes it with the Victorian feel and just has fun with it. It has a lighthearted feel to it that just speaks of a good time. But the story is complex enough that you are kept interested and wondering when the questions will be answered and the secrets revealed.
