For 1,000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the Furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal. But now, the unity of the Alerians hangs in precarious balance. The first lord of Alera has fallen in his efforts to protect his people from the vicious attacks of their enemies. Now, the fate of the Alerians lies in the hands of Tavi, a young man who must use all of his courage and resourcefulness to save his people.

Amazing intrigue and drama

The court drama interspersed with a new for had me on the edge of my seat for over 20 hours listening to this book. I am emotionally destroyed, and wrong out by the suspense and attention to detail in theis tale. Well done Mr. Butcher!

wonderful addition

Jim butcher really did a good job with this series. Tavi, Bernard, Amara and Doroga as well as all the other characters are fleashed out and real. The Enemy is clever and chilling. Read the series it's great.

Amazing Book

I made a bargain to read the first two Codex Alera books in exchange for a Dresden Files game.

I am now utterly invested in the series.

The issues with the horns/missing sections are resolved as I didn't experience those (I believe the book has been updated since those were published).

The story is very engaging and I can picture the scenes as they happen. I even sat in my car for half an hour once just to finish part!

the book is great and the voice actor does an amazing job!! it really could do without the random musical interlude things though those get old fast!

Highly enjoyable

Amazing narrator. Captivating writing. Together it makes for a winning combination as part of a real page turner type of book series.

make the horns stop

good book, great narration, but the spontaneous horns are obnoxious and do not signal anything

Fantastic!!!

First, I am a YUUUG!!!! fan of Jim Butcher. He has never disappointed me. I love this story, this one in particular ought to resonate with nerdy teens. Our heroes are all awkward teens essentially in a private school. Still working for his patron in secret missions while trying to avoid schoolyard bullies all while trying to pass his classes. Great fun

And the voice work is excellent. Some books are just awful to listen to, this one is excellent

The man is a genius with words

Love the ongoing story. Unfortunately I didn’t read the first book first but still got the gist. For anyone who likes a good battle scene this is definitely the book for you, but it is so much more. Mystery, intrigue, friendship, love and hope. I will read anything Jim Butcher writes!
