Publisher's summary

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King's Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others, a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords....

Naughty Dog's postapocalyptic video game The Last of Us is a masterclass in storytelling. Celebrated for its complex ruminations on grief, morality, and redemption, this unique take on dystopia has maintained a steady fanbase since 2013. That following is set to grow following the debut of HBO's television adaptation—a breakout hit that sacrifices none of the emotional stakes or brilliant character work of its source material.

Blew me away. Truly outstanding

This book took the series to a whole new level for me, and I was blown away. A must read for any fans of the series. However, it only makes sense if you read the books that came before. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

great book but...

awesome book, however this is G.O.T you would think they could get multiple voice actors for some of the roles. not one old guy trying to voice all of the characters. he uses the same voice for some of them and his female impressions are laughable

Skip through the "songs"

I enjoy the performance of these stories very much, but with one HUGE exception. The attempts at singing really jolt me out of the story and trigger an immediate "Alexa Skip Ahead". There are also WAY WAY too many repetitions of "HODOR" over and over and over. The narrator needs to remember that reading these sections in the book, and hearing them shouted out loud are two very different things. It quickly becomes annoying. The story, of course, is classic. It's just a shame to have portions of it ruined by over-acting at top volume.

Great Story; Narration Could Be Improved

I have listened to over 50 books on Audible over the years and have never written a review.

The story is fantastic, and Roy Dotrice is a better narrator than I could ever hope to be. But, some of the character’s voices were so extreme it was difficult to understand the text (eg, Varys) or they distracted from the storyline. (Biter had an extremely nasal voice, but was described as not having a nose??)

Little ones love hearing exaggerated “voices,“ but this is a story for adults and there were times I felt the voices were about the voices rather than to support the story. There were times I was yanked right out of the suspension of disbelief.

Some were also not consistent throughout the books, for example Jamie’s voice changed significantly— he initially sounded more like Cersei and then ended up sounding so much like Tyrion, I had to go back and review which chapter I was listening to in order to identify the character.

Roy Dotrice is phenomenal, and could have presented a 20 out of 5 star review.

My thought is that everyone got so excited about his voice talent, exploring that became the focus in the studio, rather than how best to serve the story. My personal preference as a listener would have been to use the narrator voice more, and unique character voices less.

I hope that it is clear that I am a huge fan of all involved and have tremendous respect for the talent represented. I am just sharing my experience as a listener.

Narration was tough

The voice acting took away from the story as a whole. Vargo Holt’s voice was so unpleasant I actually had to fast forward through his parts. It gave me the same kind of inner distress as listening to nails on a chalk board.
