This book was a pioneer back in 1912.

Okay story 3.5 overall, the story was mostly written as if reading a diary or thinking back on the past. I'm not a huge fan of this type of writing, but the story itself was pretty good. I did enjoy the first part better than the last. I love his alien dog. Considering this book was published around 1912 it is way ahead of its time and very imaginative considering there was very little of this type of book out for public consumption. Narrator was good but a little dry. This book and the next two in the series can be gotten for free with a Kindle/ Kindle app and then the audio purchased for .99 each with whispersync.

I have loved Burroughs since childhood. I have read all his books on John Carter and hearing it was phantasmagorical! Highly recommend to everyone!

favorite book

this has always been a favorite so glad that i have it on audio now.

blown away

everything about this book is fantastic. the narration is great too. for a 1900s author, Burroughs is extremely talented and forward looking. i suspect he wad the among the first to innovate a "close 3rd person" pov style. no head hopping. I can't wait to read the rest of his work.

Great book to listen too

Great book to listen too! I love the movie adaptation of this but, finally getting to read/hear the original version for the first time has made no difference.

Better versions

Ok. I always loved Barsoom. I took a quick listen as this is free and well....pick up a different addition. The narration ruins a timeless tale. I recommend Scott Brick’s reading if you want to spent a credit.

An old fashioned swashbuckling tale set on mars.

While an enjoyable story, the writing is dated with some old fashioned and repetitive statements. but the story itself has been robbed by Dances with Wolves and Avatar because it's a good story line. not sure if this is the oldest version of it, but it's the earliest example I have found. The narrator does a good job most of the time. Sometimes it is hard to tell of the narrator or the writing is what is over the top. I still enjoyed it.

Great Story Telling, but, NOT WOKE

I read this as I read Tarzan for historical genre background. I enjoyed both but, massive trigger warning here this was written for white males in the early 20th century. Knowing that, in craft or driving narratives and in some scene setting worth it for me.

Turn off the century sience fiction

Ideal for a 14 year old growing up in the 1920s. Very easy very easy to tell it was written by a white supremacist. But that was the norm when it was published in 1912. Storyline is a little bit far fetched. Even more far fetched given today's knowledge of science. All things being equal, it was entertaining.
