Publisher's summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

" A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)
"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." ( SFX)
"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads… Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)

Loved the narration but...

A few instances of 'Jeffrey' instead of 'Joffrey' and 'Catherine' instead of 'Catelyn.' But otherwise amazing!

Incredibly Perfect

Do yourself a favor and relive the HBO series ON audiobook. It was such a pleasure and I couldn’t put it down any more than I could not binge watch the HBO series.

A feast of a tale faithfully narrated

I have read every volume of this saga published to date and watched the DVD - this audible edition is a marvellous rendition of a great tale and Roy Dotrice does an excellent job with the huge range of characters. He is especially good with the male characters and has a good range of voices for them. I respect the fact that he does not try to be the female characters, choosing instead to rely on the author's drawing of the character rendered in the narrator's voice. This is far more effective, for me, than trying to be what he is not. I am working my way through the audible editions of each volume and am sure I will revisit them more than once. George R R Martin's imagination is rich and powerful; he has provided a feast for his fans. Roy Dotrice has enhanced my enjoyment enormously.

Good book

One of the best narrators for a story such as this. Better than the TV show

Engrossing Tale

Would you consider the audio edition of A Game of Thrones (Part One) to be better than the print version?

This is one story where I think I'd like to also read the print version, but thoroughly enjoyed the audio.

Who was your favorite character and why?

How could you pick one favourite character? The novel delves so deeply into each character, they are well rounded and all have flaws and strengths. I wavered between loving and hating every single character. The dwarf was especially endearing.

Have you listened to any of Roy Dotrice’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Wonderful reader. I've listened to a lot of audiobooks and the reader can easily distract or ruin a book. This reader has a wonderful voice for fantasy and epic tales and depicted the characters well.

Something like torture

What made the experience of listening to A Game of Thrones (Part One) the most enjoyable?

The story and the added information you just can't get from the TV series

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Game of Thrones (Part One)?

Getting to know some of the characters a bit better

How could the performance have been better?

The reader isn't consistent with the names he pronounces, he does all young people and women with the same voice - his - and his annunciation is not great in general. I wish I could hear it with a good reader

Amazing book and good narrator

This is a great read, save a couple minor naration stumbles. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Superb reading.

The narrating of this book was superb.

I couldn't stop listening. I found myself staying in the car an extra 10 minutes after I had arrived just to finish the chapter.
