GAME OF THRONES: A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

Critic reviews

"Of those who work in the grand epic-fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best.... [He] is a tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting plotter and a deft and inexhaustible sketcher of personalities.... This is as good a time as any to proclaim him the American Tolkien." ( Time)
"The only fantast series I'd put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings…. It's a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don't read fantasy…. If you're new to the series, you must begin with Book 1, A Game of Thrones. Once you're hooked…. you'll be like the rest of us fans, gnawing your knuckles until book 5” (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press)
“THE MOST impressive modern fantasy, both in terms of conception and execution, is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.… A masterpiece that will be mentioned with the great works of fantasy.” ( Contra Costa Times)

Terrible narration dumbs up this book

Please change the narration, annoying caricatures of my favorite characters. It’s a chore to listen and I quit several times. This book sounds like it was created for 6 year old boys. Almost every character sounds underdeveloped, even Sam. Real shame to butcher this book like that.

Why does he just not pronounce the names the same

The book is interesting, not quite as thrilling as the previous one, but worth the read. However, the fact he pronounces names differently or as entirely different names in parts for main characters is very disturbing and really pulls the listener out of the story.

All The Characters You Don’t Care About

I’ve got to say, I’ve enjoyed the first three books but this one was rough. It felt like more of a filler book than anything, like GRRM was just trying to get something out there and fill some pages. Some of the most important characters from the last books are either only in it for a short period from another’s perspective, or just ignored and left out outright. I’m fine with getting the perspective of other characters but when you’re just throwing so many random characters in it gets annoying.

As for the performance? The reader completely changed how names are pronounce of some characters and then completely changes how he voices them. I’m not sure how long between this performance and the last one there was but at least put the effort into going back and reviewing what you’ve done previously. It’s just sloppy.

Here to hoping that the next one isn’t as bad.

Voices

So many voices and so well done I can tell who’s talking without mentioning a name

Pronouncing names wrong

While he has a great voice for this kind of genre, why did he suddenly start pronouncing names in correctly. I also noticed him not using the right pronouns for people. I noticed for a couple of the females he would occasionally use he/him. I would sometimes have to rewind to make sure I knew who he was reading about.

Setting the table

This one was great but a slow burn. It definitely sets up the events of the next book. It had a of handful of great moments that were superb but more dull chapters.

Roy Dotrice is holding me back

I can’t stand Roy Dotrice narrating. It has taken me months to finish the series because of his voice. I wish I would have bought the physical copy of the series.

Why did he change?

I don’t understand how a narrator could read 3 novels and then suddenly decide to change half of the character voices he does in the 4th novel reading. All the determined young women have all of a sudden became angry old Welsh women.

Horrible narrator

I stopped listening to this version. It was very hard to understand the man’s utterance in certain parts of the story.
