Publisher's summary

GAME OF THRONES: A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

Critic reviews

"Of those who work in the grand epic-fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best.... [He] is a tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting plotter and a deft and inexhaustible sketcher of personalities.... This is as good a time as any to proclaim him the American Tolkien." ( Time)
"The only fantast series I'd put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings…. It's a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don't read fantasy…. If you're new to the series, you must begin with Book 1, A Game of Thrones. Once you're hooked…. you'll be like the rest of us fans, gnawing your knuckles until book 5” (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press)
“THE MOST impressive modern fantasy, both in terms of conception and execution, is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.… A masterpiece that will be mentioned with the great works of fantasy.” ( Contra Costa Times)

Boring

I struggled with this book for so long. Don't go past book 3. I think the writer has lost his way.

Voice changes and weaker plots

The book itself has weaker plots then the last 3 books. Strong secondary characters are killed off screen which i thought was weak. Main problem is that the voice actor changes voices for some of the main characters like he forgot how they sounded. Some of accents wrong for their families.

good for listening, wouldn't read it

I like the story, the performance is great, but as a 'book' overall it can be tedious, and you need to pay close attention sometimes to follow the action and different characters.

not the best

Struggled to finish. I am hoping the next in the series is more engaging.

Worst book of the series

Nothing happens in the book, lots of boring prose. You could skip this book and go straight to the fifth one and never miss a beat.

weak book, not enough of our characters!

it was like the B cast characters in this book. nothing really seemed to move plotwise. I think the books before and after this are magnificent so this pales in comparison

Frustrating

The story and performance were frustrating. Mr. Martin did not talk about two main characters that I was looking forward to hearing from, and added a bunch of new people I didn't care about. I know they were important to the story, and I'm sure they'll be more important later, but it was frustrating. The performance was frustrating because the pronounciations changed from previous books. I assume the TV series came out, and the people making this made sure they were pronouncing things right, because I can't understand why else these changes would happen. Petyr, Tyrell and Brienne all changed in pronounciations, and only some stayed consistent throughout this book.

Great story, poor performance

The performance in this novel wasn't nearly as good as the previous installments. The consistency was very poor. The squeaky, old woman voice he chose for Arya was completely different from the voice he chose for her in the other books. It also didn't fit her character in the slightest. Whatsmore, the voice he used for her chapters was different from the one he used for her during her appearance in Sam's Braavos chapter. His voice for Petyr Baelish was gruff and harsh, going completely previous performances and the character himself. It was very distracting.

Done purchasing this series

Roy's performance in the first three books made them addictive. The horrible voices and inconsistent pronunciations in this book kill the magic of the series. I should have read the reviews before I wasted my money on this audiobook ...

I'll stick to the HBO series ...

interesting but plodding.

This book was frustrating, confusing and tedious. I understand the need to tie up loose ends but this book went far beyond tying up loose ends.

For more than 1/2 the book I wanted to put it down and walk away from it. I would not have finished it but for worry that I might have missed something.

The only really interesting thing is the resurrection of Katelyn Stark's body.
