Publisher's summary

GAME OF THRONES: A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

Critic reviews

"Of those who work in the grand epic-fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best.... [He] is a tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting plotter and a deft and inexhaustible sketcher of personalities.... This is as good a time as any to proclaim him the American Tolkien." ( Time)
"The only fantast series I'd put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings…. It's a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don't read fantasy…. If you're new to the series, you must begin with Book 1, A Game of Thrones. Once you're hooked…. you'll be like the rest of us fans, gnawing your knuckles until book 5” (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press)
“THE MOST impressive modern fantasy, both in terms of conception and execution, is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.… A masterpiece that will be mentioned with the great works of fantasy.” ( Contra Costa Times)

I think I am addicted

Where does A Feast for Crows rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The level of depth and history that has been created by this series is Tolken like! My only warning is that the violence is not for the faint of heart.

A must have but not quite like the others

Would you consider the audio edition of A Feast for Crows to be better than the print version?

Yes, I would consider it better than the print. It brings the story to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The King Slayer

Which scene was your favorite?

When the king slayer was standing watch over his father's body.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I did not have a particular one.

Any additional comments?

This book is definitely a must have for "A Song of Fire and Ice" fans but it is not quite like the other books. It feels more like an interlude to something bigger to come.

Great! Weird performance changes though

What made the experience of listening to A Feast for Crows the most enjoyable?

This is a great series, the only "complaint" I have is that the orator has for some reason changed the tone of some of the characters from previous books. Whats up with Petyr sounding like the blackfish now? And poor Arya- she sounds like she fell and hit her head. It was hard enough for me to get used to the voices in the first place with a broughish man doing all, even the females. Please don't change them again!

Roy Dotrice is a global treasure

We all know how amazing the ASOIAF series is, and this, my 7th relisten, was no less enthralling as the first. But the narration and the ingenious voice work of the inimitable Dotrice sets these recordings to another level. Please, to the Old Gods and the New, let him stay alive long enough to record Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring if GRRM ever finishes them. we listeners will accept no substitute. Dotrice is a consumate master of his craft, and the world is a far better place for it. We love you, Roy.

Can it get much better?

This book and the following, A Dance with Dragons, are broken up into the stories of only half of the characters. There is a note by Martin in the physical book explaining that he would rather tell the whole story of half of the characters rather than half of they story for all of the characters. So don't expect to see Dany, Tyrion, or Jon in this book. Absolutely wonderful! It makes you crave the next one.

Excellent!

Some of the voices that were consistently the same in previous books changed in this one. It threw me off for a bit and made it hard to get into the book at first. But once I got past that, this book was fantastic!

awesome

Roy dotrice is awesome, I would listen to him narrate the phone book. I love how all the rapists and brigands have west country accents.

Kinda disappointing....for a GoT book.

Dotrice is amazing as always, but this story is much different than others in the Song of Ice and Fire series. There are multiple chapters named for characters we don't know and you don't find out who they are until minutes into the chapter. There isn't a single Jon or Dany chapter in the book. Compared to the rest of the series, it was just a little disappointing.
