Publisher's Summary

Konowa Swift Dragon, former commander of the Empire's elite Iron Elves, is looked upon as anything but ordinary. He has murdered a Viceroy, been court-martialed, seen his beloved regiment disbanded, and been banished in disgrace to the one place he despises the most---the forest.

Now all Konowa wants is to be left alone with his misery. But for him, nothing is ever that simple. The mysterious and alluring Visyna Tekoy, the highborn daughter of an elfkynan governor, seeks him out in the dangerous wild with a royal decree that he resume his commission as an officer in Her Majesty's Imperial Army, effective immediately. For in the east, a falling Red Star heralds the return of a magic long vanished from the earth. Rebellion grows within the Empire as a frantic race to reach the Star unfolds. It is a chance for Konowa to redeem himself---even if the entire affair appears doomed to be a suicide mission. And the soldiers recruited for the task are not at all what he expects. Worse, his key adversary in the perilous race for the Star is the dreaded Shadow Monarch---a legendary elf-witch whose machinations for absolute domination spread deeper than Konowa could ever imagine.

    "Pleasantly surprised..."

I bought this on a whim but I am glad that I did. It has kept me entertained. A little slow in the beginning but not bad once you get into it. Looking forward to more books.

    "worth my time"

This book, while i agree is not a unique one, is one that i enjoyed. it took me a little bit to get into it but once i did i was really upset to find that it has no sequel yet. i love series' that i can get into and this would definately suit me better than alot of books i've found lately. it progressed straight toward an obvious conflict at the end, but as the first in a series, Evans did a good job letting us get to know the characters well enough for me to see this as an intro. and i really do expect the next book/s to be even better.

I really enjoyed this book of the series, and I am looking forward to the next one. The characters were lifelike, and there were times when I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard. I highly recommend it.

"Will buy books 2 and 3 when they come out"

As one other reviewer said, it is a little slow to get started, but the character development and plot pick up quite nicely after the first chapter or two. At first, it seems like another standard D&D/fantasy book with the good guy finding incredibly awesome powers to defeat the ancient evil, but it turns into a book with characters that you start to care about what happens to them. I listen to books during the commute to work, and it's been hard to wait until I get back in the car to find out what happens next.

Michael Kramer does a good job on this book. He is easy to listen to, and his different character voices are distinctive enough that you have no problem knowing who's talking.

"Michael Kramer is amazing - the story was just OK"

I selected this audio book because I'm a fan of Michael Kramer (the narrator). As always, he does an amazing job. The story itself was good but not great. It seemed to lack depth as if background information about the characters had been edited out. I enjoyed the book but not enough to pick up the second book in this series.

    "Thoroughly enjoyable! Very entertaining!"

Have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters and the plot were not as predictable as others in the same genre. As for the narration, Michael Kramer was definitely the guy for the job. He managed to personify the depth in each character and the true feeling of the book that I am certain Chris Evans desired. Several chapters gave me goosebumps. The climax and ending to the story were great!

This book was in my Audible library for a very long time before I finally managed to listen to it. Now I am kicking myself for not listening to it sooner or at least soon enough to put the second in the series on my download list last month.

Thank you Audible for making my commute something I actually look forward to each day. Ok, well maybe "look forward to" is a little much.

    "a light fantasy"

It's pretty middle of the road. Elves, Dragons, and Various other monsters. If you are a fantasy addict you'll probably get some enjoyment. If you looking for "something different" - I'd try somewhere else.

I listen to books when I'm at work or doing chores. I prefer history and fantasy. My favorite audio book is Going Postal by Terry Pratchett.

    "A Story Without a Hook"

I went back and forth over whether this was a 2 or a 3 but in the end I decided 3 stars is reserved for books I at least finished. This book is right on the borderline.

The concept for the world is a good one but the story is told in such a boring and cliche way that there's just no in. For all the long physical description of meaningless objects and settings the author fails to sell the world or give it the least believability. It's especially amusing when he wants to make sure that you understand that a character is evil, he lays it on so thick he must have used a trowel.

I can't help thinking that a slight adjustment in the narrative might have made this book tolerable. Perhaps if the narration were less overwrought or if the story had focused on the main character earlier and at greater length. Except the more I heard about the main the less sympathy I felt for him. The idea of an elf who can't connect with nature is interesting for about 5 minutes but then he manages to be so distasteful that I ceased to care about his problems at all.

The narrator reads this story like he is either bored and falling asleep in mid-sentence or having trouble with all the big words. I can't help thinking he shares my opinions.

I am a Tower and the Hive, Dragonriders of Pern, The Vor Game, and Eve Dallas(J.D.Robb) Patricia Cornwell Fan. This was a refreshing change for me. Keep my attention and even has we wanting more.
