Publisher's summary

Egil and Nix, the hard-fighting, harder-drinking fortune hunters of The Hammer and the Blade and A Discourse in Steel, are back to test their mettle and tempt fickle fate.

Fantasy fiction has long welcomed adventurous rogues: Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, George R. R. Martin's Dunk and Egg, and Scott Lynch's Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen have all made their marks. In his Egil & Nix series, New York Times best-selling author Paul S. Kemp introduces a daring new duo to the ranks of fantasy fame - or is it infamy?

Nix is a nimble thief with just enough knowledge of magic to get into serious trouble. Egil is the only priest of a discredited god. Together they seek riches and renown, but somehow it is always misadventure and mayhem that find them - even in the dive bar they call home. And their luck has yet to change.

All Nix wants to do is cheer Egil up after a bout of heartbreak. And, of course, strike it so rich that they need never worry about their combined bar bill. But when the light-fingered scoundrel plunders a tomb and snatches mysterious golden plates covered in runes, the treasure brings terrifying trouble. Pursued by an abomination full of ravenous hunger and unquenchable wrath, Egil and Nix find all they hold dear - including their beloved tavern - in dire peril. To say nothing of the world itself.

Paul's done it again

I just finished it last night. I've always thought of Egil and Nix second rate characters/books compared to Erevis Cale and his books... Not the case anymore after finishing Conversation in Blood, that ending was epic, the whole progression of the story and trying to figure out where it was leading to was amazing. I only wish there was more to read, thank you for such an awesome book. You won't be disappointed in this book, in fact you'll be left wanting more and there's no cliffhanger.

Incredible

Paul S. Kemp's best Egil and Nix tale. The story is dark, makes you think about existence. The sacrifices are incredible.

Exceeded my expectations, which were pretty high.

This series is one of my favorites because Kemp's characters are endearing and the unique speech patterns and humorous dialogue brought to life by Nick Podehl are riveting as a listener. I've listened to the other books in the series multiple times and they are worth coming back to as I will be returning to A Conversation In Blood again real soon.

There is always a price to pay

There is always a price to pay. You get nothing for free.
This is a theme I've always found enduring with the Egil and Nix series. Something to always keep you thinking and remind you that these two haphazard, knuckle heads are risking quite a bit to be heroes. No high fantasy, daring hero managing to come out unscathed and happily ever after. It gives it a true sense of gravitas.
This is running in the forefront of this particular adventure. The heroes stubbornly stare destiny and death in the face and mock their faces before spitting in it. Because it's Egil and Nix!

A conversation in blood

Fantastic book! Please keep in mind that this is the third book and it will refer back to the other two books and sort stories. Go pick up Hammer and Blade and start there! You will not regret it!

Note: these stories are not for children
