Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

best of its genre

Would you consider the audio edition of A Clash of Kings to be better than the print version?

If I have time to read, that is always better. However, Roy does a great job with the first three books in this series.

Can't put down good read!

I've been meaning to read the books ever since the show got popular on HBO. My long car trips and yucky cleaning days are much more fun when I get sucked into the #GOT world.

You will be enthralled!

Having been a huge fan of the tv series, I love listening to the books. There is so much detail and so much more in the books. I can’t wait until I listen to the next chapter.
I honestly think the narrator does a great job, as this series cannot be easy to narrate. So many characters. But he acts out with his voice to make the story so much more interesting than if there was someone just reading the words.

Highly recommend!

Great story, just a so-so reading

I love all these books! I've read them all and watched all the episodes on HBO, and decided I also wanted the luxury of having them read to me. I'd seen good things about the reader, Roy Dotrice, but I found him only passable. His voice differenciation of tge characters, particularly the women, was annoying and his mispronunciation of names was extremely distracting, taking me out of the story every time. I'd have thought he or someone would have verified how to pronounce the major characters' names and significant locations, but perhaps the narrations were done a long time ago before GRRM became a household name and no one thought it important then.

Still, I derived many hours of pleasure from A Clash of Kings, and I look forward to the rest of the series, even with the annoyances.

Amazing story, mediocre narration

The story is amazing but the narrator gives most of the characters an annoying voice- like they have a mouth full of tongue.

Second time thru was even better

I read all the books. Now I'm experiencing them on audible. They're even better the second time through. Great read.
