Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Featured Article: The Best Audiobook Series of All Time by Genre

What makes a good audiobook series? There are as many answers to this question as there are listeners. For some, it might be epic battles. For others, it might be ongoing romantic twists and tensions. For still others, it might be elongated character studies or an in-depth analysis of a particular time and place. But the universal element of a truly great series is that it sticks with you long after the last word. These are our favorites from every major genre.

Enjoyed book two of GOT

This book filled in a lot of holes from the HBO show - which is also quite good.

Good Rendition

Roy Dotrice sometimes has a bit of an issue switching between a narrative voice and one of the characters'. Nevertheless, he did better in this book than the first and does the story justice.

Great book

This second book of the series is just as good as the first one. Much more fighting in this one. Great story, can't wait to listen to the next one... Having said that, the narrator is good, but with so many characters their voices run together sometimes. But he does a great job using the same voice for the same characters.

Will not disappoint

I have listened to each book at least three times and it seems like I learn something new each time.

Loved the performance

was listening to different YouTube fan-made GOT audiobooks until I discovered audible and I will never not use audible again. This was amazing.

Some voices don't fit

I think some of the voice choices distract from the narrative. Most women are a miss for me but other voices are spot on.

Incomplete narration

Around chapter 63, I was notified that I had reached the end of the professional narration and I was welcome to reading the material that was not narrated. The partial narration is not worth this price. I honestly feel swindled because the description doesn't seem to indicate this, at least I could not find a disclaimer.

Hard on the ears

As a huge fan of the books I've read them multiple times. I decided to give the audio version a try. The narrator left a lot to be desired! At the beginning it was tolerable but the introduction of tyrion (in the form of a horrendously bad Welsh accent) was the final straw! Tyrion is a highborn son of a powerful house and known to be educated and eloquent, so why does he sound like a peasant troll?? Very off putting. It seems the narrator was trying to differentiate him by his disability.

so much blood guts and gore

The performance was amazing. The voices used truly pull you in, even when he is doing a girls or woman's voice.
Since this is the second book, I had hoped the violence would lessen a bit. it starts to seem like gratuitous violence, just there for the sake of sensationalism. The story seems to always twist to the opposite of the lead-in. Almost to the point that it is predictable.

get ready to be addicted

Any additional comments?

I knew I shouldn't have started this series. 15 years or so I have resisted. But, in a moment of weakness, and a sincere interest in taking a break from War & Peace, I decided to embark upon the fantasy adventure of the 21st century. He has been compared to Tolkien (no comparison) and the series has been turned into an Emmy-winning TV series (too much T&A for me, thanks) but when the dust all settles, he's a very good storyteller who has created a very interesting world with magic, kingdoms, dire wolves and mystery. It is a great recipe for nail-biting page turning, but, um..... this is kind of a soap opera. consider yourself warned. I am now addicted.
