"So now the men of my royal guard - frightening warriors skilled with blade, spell, and gun - have become my lovers, auditioning with pleasure for the role of future king and father of my child. And they must still protect me from assasination attempts - for unlike most fey, I am part human, and very mortal.
"All this royal backstabbing makes it difficult for me to pursue my living as a private investigator in Los Angeles, especially since the media made sure the whole world knows the Faerie princess is alive and well in sunny California.
"Now, in the City of Angels, people are dying in mysterious, frightening ways. What the human police don't realize is that the killer is hunting fey as well. Havoc lies on the horizon; the very existence of the place known as Faerie is at grave risk.
"So now, while I enjoy the greatest pleasures of my life with my guardians, I must fend off an ancient evil that could destroy the very fabric of reality. And that's just my day job."
Fairie tales: listen to another Meredith Gentry fantasy.

"Hamilton weaves the modern and magical seamlessly in a compelling tale of the effects of three kinds of power - magical, sexual, and the most dangerous, political." (Booklist)
If your not shy about very well written sex scenes, that are also important to the storyline, than this series is a wild ride. Princess Meridith is descended from several fertility goddesses, so naturally her greatest power is expressed in the bedroom. Her lovers are all beings who have lost their power, and consequently, the world of the fey is dying -- but through her, they, and the fey, are revitalized. As a fiction writer, I find Ms. Hamilton's depictions to be a masterclass in writing a compelling sex scene. As a fan, I am endlessly entertained by her originality, and the courage of her convictions to tell the story as it is meant to be told. Having read the series, I'm now enjoying the audio books, just as much, if not more. The narrator is perfect.
For those who find it to be too much, I say, quit complaining and move along. This series is meant for adults. Go read Harry Potter. Again.
I just can't get enough of the Meredith Gentry Series. It contains all aspects I crave Fantasy, Romance, Drama, Action, and Humor sprinkled throughout each climaxing novel. I often find myself longing to be part "She" so much so that I'd gladly except relations to the lesser Fey. Laurell K Hamilton I salute your ability to weave a tale that makes me want to pay almost anything just to get my next fix.
This was the second book by this author that I have listened too and though overall I have to say the storyline is completely outrageous and sort of silly-it is interesting in a voyeuristic kind of way. Seriously. I do not believe that it would be possible for someone to have as much "passion"; as the main character is supposed to have and admit I am compelled at least little to see if she does become with child and if so-will she know of the father is. So yes, despite only a 3 star rating, I will be getting the next book-purely to satisfy the above questions.
When I first started listening to the book, I thought possibly my Ipod had broken down. The narrator sounds like she's been fed through a machine somehow. Very jarring and poor character voices. I'm finding it difficult to follow along on the story because of the narration. Great story, but poor narration.
This series really needs a male AND female narrator. There are too many male characters and the female narrator is just not up to the job. The pronunciations are somewhat mangled as well. Siobann is NOT pronounced See-o-bon...lol.
This is one of the best books in the series because, although there are explicit sex scenes, they dont seem as gratuitous and the author focuses most on the politics and intrigue of the various fairy courts....the most interesting aspect of the concepts in the series. Yes, there are the tiresome detailed descriptions of everyone's eye and hair colors. For some reason, the author wants to make very sure you know exactly what everyone looks like in minute detail. I can forgive this because the perils and intricacies of the fairy politics are just as well detailed and far more interesting. It is a fully imagined and realized world and I enjoy experiencing it.
same old story... her two naked guys with really long hair... I am bored. I guys it's time to stop buying her stuff... I couldn't even get past the first chapter on this one.
I would say this book is second only to the first in the series.
I absolutely adore Meredith Gentry, but her cast of guards make the story compelling for me.
Laural Merlington accentuates the personality quirks of the characters, making them real, distinct, and powerful. She brings the whole cast to life.
This book made me laugh out loud countless times. There are emotional moments, and steamy moments, but the interactions between the characters make for some memorable scenes.
I am SO glad that these books were my first exposure to audiobooks. I can't stop listening. I am hooked.
I have to say when I read this series I liked this book better than the first even. We learn more about the fey and Merry's men and there's a really neat twist for the "bad guy". So, thankfully the story is the same so that's why the 4 stars. The narrator is not so great. She doesn't take the time to learn how to pronouce things properly and that's a really annoying habit in a narrator. Her inflection and voices improved though so I'm hoping by the end of the series she'll be able to do a decent job. Thank goodenss this was whisperlink and only $3.99. Not a credit worthy performance otherwise.
